I’ll say that I did not expect the exhibition “Modernity and Opulence: Wiener Werkstätte Women,” at the Jewish Museum in New York, to open with work by two men. Nor did I anticipate the wall label lauding one Nazi, listed among the founding members described as “progressive thinkers.” But I’d been eagerly awaiting my afternoon with the work of the little-known ladies of fin-de-siècle Vienna, so this puzzling prelude was hardly a deterrent.

When I learned of an opportunity to interview Michael E. Smith—an artist I’ve long admired—my brain boomeranged: I was excited to hear from an elusive artist who seldom speaks, but also stumped as to what exactly I might ask the man. I intuited that direct questions—of the what does this mean, why did you make that variety—wouldn’t do for an artist whose work is so withholding. His sculptures have this magical yet vernacular quality you’d feel silly overexplaining.

“New Humans” Takes a Disappointingly Old Approach to Disability

When I picture cyborgs, I can’t help but picture the ones I know—all of them are disabled. Insulin pumps, cochlear implants, and pacemakers make human-machine hybrids out of people every day. So when I saw that New York’s New Museum was reopening with a cyborg-centric show, “New Humans: Memories of the Future,” I assumed it would account for the disability arts movement blossoming right there in the museum’s backyard.
