From the top of Seattle’s first skyscraper, Smith Tower, the city unfolds in layers. Art deco gives way to mid century red brick, while the Seattle Great Wheel slowly turns against a backdrop of ferries criss-crossing the open waters of Puget Sound. The view is just as compelling from the tower’s 35th-floor Observatory Bar, espresso martini in hand. It’s stronger than I’m used to – although whether that’s down to the spirit or the coffee is up for debate.

Intrepid Travel says 77% of guests on its Women’s Expeditions travel without a companion, and last year, nearly half of those were over 50. Meanwhile, Mercury Holidays has recorded a 55% year-on-year increase in its solo tour bookings.
