Mothers were different
In 1894, Mary Molloy married Jimmy O’Meara, a Liverpool docker. She was 30 and he was 37. Mary may well have fallen in love, but the marriage made economic sense too. Although she had worked since girlhood, she earned only 12 shillings a week – just above the average women’s wage at the turn of the century, but not really enough for her to live comfortably on her own. And, given the limited employments available to women, Mary knew she had little hope of ever getting more.

The shift to a casual form of dress has been a reaction to the growth of athleisure, a casualised workplace and consequently, a demand for comfortability. In A/W 17/18 we saw the tailoring trend start to trickle into assortments and for S/S 18, this was amplified.

MasterCard smart mirror: A ‘virtual personal shopper’ set to take payments
Smart mirrors are a major tech direction for retailers at present, but the focus tends to be on features such as augmented reality or providing information. We don’t tend to hear about them being used as payments devices. However, now MasterCard in the UK has unveiled a changing room that allows shoppers to pay for their items through a mirror. With its smart mirror already being used by Levi’s in the US, the company is promising 40% less time in the fitting room and speedier shopping “guaranteed”.
SROI: Strategies for success in the digital age
Social return on investment (SROI), a way to measure extra-financial value, has been a legitimised concept since 2006. However, in the age of Instagram, Twitter, and Internet virality, SROI has only grown in importance – and has become increasingly hard to achieve. So how can you run a campaign measured by SROI in the digital age? And how, in general, do you measure it? Here are three methods to success. Selecting the right cause: demographics and brand DNA must be considered.
Fitness & activewear: How to avoid sinking in a saturated market
The fitness and activewear market continues to boom in the UK – growing new-in volumes by 5.5% YOY following continued emphasis on wellness in 2018. However, dangers of saturation are only becoming more imminent, leading to a 46.8% increase of marked down products on a year on year basis.

TAIABOTANICS is a literal take on natural beauty – focusing on sustainability, ethics and female empowerment.

We’ve identified The Power of Play as a key trend – a fresh approach that uses playful, ironic and colourful experiences to engage visitors into conversations around complex issues, such as gender freedom or food scarcity. Playfulness creates accessibility, a strategy for designers – and brands – to include and captivate a broader audience.
Menswear: Winning strategies for 2018
Growth in the menswear market is outstripping womenswear – there has been a 1.5% increase of new-in UK menswear products YOY in Q1 2018, while womenswear new-ins have stayed flat. This growth is polarised and driven by fast-fashion players who are catering to an increasingly style-conscious male shopper. However, increased availability by retailers means the market is becoming more competive, and male shoppers more demanding. Here’s our how-to guide to win in 2018: Convenience is crucial.

Gen Z spending: Streetwear, athleisure and eating out

Well, in the US, it seems that food, streetwear, beauty and video games are all among the top categories on their priority list. The most romantic looks from the NYFW runway
It wouldn’t be Valentine’s Day without a few (somewhat clichéd) references to hearts and roses – and, of course, the token, associated shades of red. But from Anya Hindmarch’s chubby hearts on the streets of London, to Jonathan Simkhai’s red slip dresses in his suffragette-inspired show, the colour red- and all its connotations- is revamped this Valentine’s Day.
Valentine’s Day: How to compete in an experience-driven economy
Love is in the air as Valentine’s Day is on the approach- but WGSN Instock data proves little movement within the market. Throughout January, shares of Valentine’s themed products within the new-in womenswear assortment remains flat YOY- and key products and colours such as lingerie, pink and red show little YOY change. The reality is, clothing nor accessories are no longer driving Valentine’s purchases – especially amongst Gen Z and Millennial customers.
Young users: Snapchat triumphs over Facebook
Facebook has a problem- it’s losing young users and it’s Snapchat that’s picking them up. And while we’ve been aware of it shedding youthful users for a while, according to eMarketer’s latest forecast on social network usage, Facebook is losing them “at an even faster pace than previously expected.” True, Facebook is still gaining users (it’s predicted to see a US rise of 1% to almost 170m this year), but they tend to be older.
New Look: Refocusing on customer ‘sweet spot’ right way to revival
While New Look’s latest financial results were no surprise to the market, they, once again, served to highlight the depth of the retailer’s troubles – UK like-for-like sales declined 10.7% for the 39 weeks to December 23rd.

Powerful marketing pushes Victoria's Secret into top 10 fashion retailers
Victoria’s Secret is considered a retail giant within the US and, despite recently reporting profit losses, it’s still well regarded by US consumers. They have a relatively small retail footprint in the UK, which makes its appearance in the UK 2017 Best Fashion Retailer rankings all the more impressive. In 2016, Victoria’s Secret made the somewhat controversial decision to abandon its swimwear and apparel categories to focus solely on lingerie, beauty and the Pink brand.
