What was your first job as a journalist?
I interned for the Beachcomber.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Actually, yes.
How is social media changing news?
It allows news to get out faster, but at the expense of accuracy.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Clark Kent by a mile.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
To me, it means that you take raw information, and you format it in such a way that you impartially and objectively deliver it.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I don't have a preference. Tell me your idea and we'll go from there.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Mostly just Google Drive, and Audition for audio.
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram by a long shot.
Who do you wish followed you?
Easily, Trevor Noah.
Why did you become a journalist?
I feel that everyone has a story to tell, but not everyone knows how to tell it. I want to be the bridge to that gap.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No. I didn't become a journalist until I was 31.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Covering an international student from Iran who couldn't get home due to COVID-19.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Take your gear with you to shoot video and catch audio. News is everywhere.
When's the best time to pitch you?
The news never stops, and neither do I. I'm available 24/7.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
Writing about a railway reopening.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Writing about the Long Beach Breakwater.
What's your favorite drink?
As plain as it sounds, water.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Riding a bike.

I subscribe to the Los Angeles Times.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
I'm a journeyman. I've yet to be tied down to a beat.
