Sarasota-area Congressman Greg Steube shared the most valuable player award Wednesday night with a Republican teammate who made a diving catch in the outfield that left him bloodied in the annual Congressional Baseball Game. The Republicans defeated the Democrats 11-2 before about 30,000 people at Nationals Park in the game that annually raises millions for charity.

While the reports of property taxes’ demise in Florida were greatly exaggerated this month in headlines and instant-news stories, the deeper details of what the state Legislature approved in special session June 2 are far more nuanced than a click-grabbing headline. First off, it’s not a done deal. To be enacted, the proposed tax-system overhaul put forth two weeks ago requires 60% approval in the November election. Initially, that bar doesn’t appear insurmountable, based on polling data.

Truck crashes into Palm Aire home

A man in his 60s was injured in a Palm Aire home early Tuesday morning when a full-sized pickup truck missed a stop sign at an adjacent intersection and crashed into the Palm Aire property. The Florida Highway Patrol said the 62-year-old sustained “non-incapacitating’’ injuries in the 12:30 a.m. crash at the corner of Tournament Boulevard and West Country Club Drive, which is just east of Lockwood Ridge Road.
