The Arc of White Evangelical Racism Is Long, but Complicated
The last several years have witnessed no small uptick in accessible academic books about evangelicals. Some of the most striking works have explored the political and racial history of the movement. This is evident in books like Jemar Tisby’s The Color of Compromise: The Truth About the American Church’s Complicity in Racism, John Fea’s Believe Me: The Evangelical Road to Donald Trump, and Thomas Kidd’s Who is an Evangelical?: The History of a Movement in Crisis.
Teach Black History Better by Learning from Jesus
As a kid, my friends and I believed that the designation Black History Month in February was due to a racist conspiracy because it was the shortest month of the year. Thankfully, I learned as an adult that Dr. Carter G. Woodson chose to designate Negro History Week as the week of Frederick Douglass’ and Abraham Lincoln’s birthdays because of the role these men play in the liberation journey of Black people.

When Your Spouse Is Mentally Ill
“I think someone is listening in to our phones.” This was the first hint of the coming crisis that would dismantle my life as I knew it. My husband shared with me his growing paranoia. Someone was watching us from the lot across the street. He couldn't tell me details because they were listening in to our conversations at home as well. He thought they might try to kill him on his way to work. At first, he was very convincing. I loved my husband. He was funny and smart.
The Waters of Baptism Flow Toward Humanity at Its Neediest
All four Gospels tell the story of Jesus’ baptism, as if every reader needs to hear it. Jesus’ cousin John, outfitted in a garment made of camel’s hair and a rustic leather belt, has set up camp in an unmarked wilderness to preach and prophesy. Everyone comes out to listen: the pious and the profane. The bankrupt and the ruined. The broken and the eccentric. Religious misfits and spiritual castoffs. All get a dose of John’s caustic threats and stern warnings.
Black Christians Are Confronting Black Lies About Faith
When I went to college at Bowie State University in 1991, I—like many African Americans in the ’80s and ’90s—stepped into a new hotbed of identity ideologies. Many Blacks entering college at this time (historically Black colleges in particular) would be wearing some type of cultural accessory pointing out their connection to Africa, from African medallions made of leather to T-shirts depicting the continent of Africa using some African artistic pattern.
“伊斯兰教民族”(Nation of...

Ian Cron Answers Your Enneagram Questions
Is the Enneagram compatible with Christianity? Ian Cron, author of The Road Back to You and The Story of You says yes. On this episode of The Russell Moore Show, Cron and Moore talk about the Christian roots of the personality typing system known as the Enneagram. They discuss how helpful the Enneagram can be as a tool for spiritual formation.
Why Latino Christians Treasure January 6
Much of the global body of Christ knows January 6 as Epiphany, the church calendar’s final day of Christmas and an opportunity to remember the Magi’s early recognition of Jesus as God. In the Spanish-speaking world, this time is known as el Día de los Reyes, or Three Kings Day, and often includes presents, culinary traditions, and even visits from the wise men themselves. For a variety of reasons, the day and its festivities have been inconsistently carried on in American Latino communities.
‘Give Us a King’: Lessons from the Capitol Sedition
When the prophet Samuel grew old, he made his sons the leaders of Israel in his stead. But his sons were corrupt, and the people were soon discontent with their unjust rule. “Give us a king to lead us,” the elders said. Samuel was offended, but he took the request before God.
What it Means to Be God
Advent Week 4: Incarnation and Nativity This week, we step into the events of the Nativity and consider the miracle of the eternal Word entering the world as a human child. We learn lessons of faith from the people whom God chose to play a part in these events. And we celebrate the good news of great joy for all people! Read Philippians 2:5–11.
I Used to Run with Drug Addicts and Prostitutes. Now I Share the Gospel with Them.
I was born in Los Angeles to a family in turmoil. My father was an alcoholic and a womanizer, and he was married four times by the time I was 17. My mother left when I was about 5 years old, and I never saw her again. Throughout my childhood, I was moved from foster home to foster home. I started using drugs when I was 13. I believe that’s when I finally realized that I hated myself.
Research: Religious Americans Less Likely to Divorce
According to the US Census, the average American couple gets married around the age of 30. Many young adults believe that forming unions closer to that age reduces their risk of divorce, and, indeed, there is research consistent with that belief. But we also have evidence suggesting that religious Americans are less likely to divorce, even as they are more likely to marry younger than 30.
Henrietta Mears, the Improbable Evangelical Leader
Even in her own day, Henrietta Mears cut an improbable figure. So short she often stood on risers to be seen over the speaker’s podium, she was built, as one of her devotees put it, “like a fireplug.” Rather stocky with thick glasses and a husky voice, she did not often leave her home without a fur draped over her shoulders and a hat perched jauntily atop her neatly coiffed hair.

Bringing Us Home
Advent Week 3: Sacrifice and Salvation God spoke through the prophets in the Old Testament, using poetic words and imagery, to describe the hope of salvation. This week, we contemplate prophecies pointing toward the Messiah—the servant, the light, the promised one God’s people longed for. Read Isaiah 12:2–6; 52:7–10 and Zephaniah 3:14–20. When you hear home, what comes to mind? For some, the word triggers trauma. Others feel ambivalent toward their notions and memories of home.
If a Social Issue Matters to God, the Church Should Be Praying About It
We live in a world full of public trauma and tragedy. Most mornings, we wake up to discover newsfeeds and social media accounts churning with fear, anger, guilt, and shame rooted in a long list of persistent social problems. In this age of ubiquitous information, our heads and hearts are quickly flooded by the rising waters of evil and injustice. A decade ago, I began to record every time I heard the statement “The church is so silent about X.” My anecdotal list is now very long.
Religious Discrimination Complaints Hit 10-Year Low
Malinda Babineaux never wears pants. As an Apostolic Pentecostal woman who believes she should always be modest and feminine, she wears a scrub dress or skirt when she goes to work as a prison nurse. It’s unusual, but it has never gotten in the way of her doing her job. She explained this to her new employers when she was hired by Wellpath LLC to provide health care at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in downtown San Antonio.

The Presbyterian minister Francis Grimké was born in 1850. His father was a slaveholder and his mother was enslaved. While Grimké was still young, his father died of the yellow fever epidemic, and although his father had tried to preventatively take care of his family before he passed, the death catapulted Grimké and his siblings’ childhoods into hardship and mistreatment.

Why You Can’t Just ‘Give Them the Gospel’
Christians believe that the gospel is universal and normative for all peoples at all times and in all places. But we often forget that the gospel is not acultural, as if it hovers above culture and is devoid of any culture. Instead, the gospel is deeply enculturated. That is why we have to explain the Bible’s culture whenever we give a story or talk from the Bible. Whenever we teach the Bible to children or newcomers, we often begin with the phrase, “In their culture . .
Evangelical Experts Oppose Trump’s Refugee Ban
Despite previous plans to admit the highest number of refugees in decades, the United States will shut its doors to thousands displaced by conflict in the Middle East—at least temporarily—under an executive order President Donald Trump signed Friday. Christian aid groups responsible for resettlement mourned and criticized the president’s decision to stop accepting any refugees into the United States for the next four months.
1,180 Churches Help World Relief Resettle Refugees at Record Rate
Last month, World Relief nearly doubled the number of refugees it resettles in the United States in a typical month. In the past 12 months, the evangelical agency handled a caseload of 9,759 refugees—its largest total since 1999. “The task set before us last month was nothing short of monumental,” stated president Scott Arbeiter.
