Between the Puerto Rican People’s Day Parade and Pride month, June is an exciting time for Brianna Vanschoyck. “It’s like the best time of year,” said Vanschoyck, 29, of Humboldt Park, where the parade has been hosted by the Puerto Rican Cultural Center since 1978. She attended Saturday with her friends, family and bearded dragon, Gertie, who had a Puerto Rican flag tucked into her harness. “I just feel so proud, and I love celebrating and being in the community,” Vanschoyck said.

North West plays first solo show at Summer Smash, drawing mix of curious onlookers and true fans

On opening day of the Lyrical Lemonade Summer Smash, festivalgoers faced a dilemma. Should they go see veteran Chicago rapper G Herbo on the main stage, or watch an overlapping performance by North West, the oldest child of Kim Kardashian and Ye, formerly Kanye West? The decision wasn’t as clear-cut as you might guess, and some weren’t afraid to admit it. Fans packed Lenny’s Tent Stage for North West’s set Friday on day one of Summer Smash Festival.
