‘Your Fellow Americans’ uncovers the country beneath our feet
Every spring, Peter Santenello’s parents would have a dump truck come down their long driveway, deep in the Vermont countryside, to unload a fresh pile of sand for their young son’s enjoyment. Santenello would spend hours creating sand roads for his toy trucks, his vast network of roadways weaving through the forest and fields surrounding his home and eventually meandering onto a neighbor’s property far away. Review of ‘This Land Is Your Land: A Road Trip Through U.S. History’
This Land Is Your Land: A Road Trip Through U.S. History; by Beverly Gage Simon & Schuster; 352 pp., $30.00 The journey begins, unsurprisingly, in revolutionary Philadelphia at Independence Hall and ends in mid-20th-century Southern California at the happiest place on Earth (yes, Disneyland). However, the book is arranged by chronological time periods, not by geography, so the journey is not a straight shot from the East to the West coast. As Gage puts it, there’s a lot of zigzagging in between.

All the world is Al Pacino’s stage Original
The year is 1945 and a future world-famous actor is honing his craft in a tiny sixth-story apartment in the South Bronx, where he lives with his grandparents and single mother. He is reenacting a scene from The Lost Weekend, a movie he recently saw with his mom. It’s the scene where the main character, a self-destructive alcoholic, is ransacking his apartment for the liquor he had hidden away when he was drunk but can’t remember where he hid it.
'The Woman in Me' by Britney Spears, reviewed: Princess of Pop holds nothing back in cathartic memoir
“I’m not that innocent,” belts Britney Spears in her 2000 hit song "Oops! … I Did It Again." That certainly sounds like it was true as you read the first part of Spears’s hit new memoir, The Woman in Me. She writes of growing up too fast in the tiny town of Kentwood, Louisiana, witnessing her father’s alcohol-induced mood swings and dayslong absences from the family, waiting tables at the local seafood restaurant at age 9, drinking daiquiris with her mother at 13, and losing her virginity at 14.
Paul Bloom's journey through the mind
Professor Paul Bloom’s Introduction to Psychology is one of Yale’s most popular courses of all time. In his new book, Psych: The Story of the Human Mind, his eighth, he provides readers a tour of that course and of many of the ideas he’s developed over his career as a research psychologist, with plenty of well-placed anecdotes and quotations from great thinkers and philosophers throughout history to reinforce his teaching points.
Women Are Winning in the Trump Era
Women Are Winning in the Trump Era COMMENTARY This week could go down in history as the time so-called journalists finally embarrassed themselves beyond all redemption.
The fight for Israel must continue after historic embassy move
My first visit to Israel — a two-week, national security-focused trip — recently gave me the unique opportunity to be in Jerusalem on the very day the U.S. Embassy officially opened in the Holy City. And on my return, I can only express my dismay at how recent events there were covered in the U.S. media. I interact with journalists daily, and while some do their very best to hide their bias, others put it on full display.
Fourth Line home ransacked
On December 22, Erin resident Rosemary Crisp returned home from work to discover her front door had been damaged and her home ransacked. Sometime between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. thieves had entered her home on the Fourth Line while she was out and stole thousands of dollars worth of personal belongings. All of her silver flatware and all of her jewellery was taken. Among the items stolen were some irreplaceable family treasures. Two Bose radios and a television set were also taken.
Erin students urged to seek social justice
On the first day of winter and day 235 of his “Push for Change” movement, Joe Roberts arrived in Erin to reach out to over 700 students from Erin Public and EDHS with a powerful message: “Everyone should have access to a safe, warm home; food and access to the resources to make themselves successful,” he said. The goal of the campaign is to one day eliminate youth homelessness and he is pushing a shopping cart across Canada to promote his cause.

In that spirit, an Arabic workshop was held at the United Church on Nov. 2, hosted by the Erin Refugee Action group and organized by Barbara Harrison. Over 40 people attended the class.
