At just 16 years old, Kane Parsons reshaped internet horror with his viral series of YouTube shorts centred on The Backrooms, a liminal space theory that became a Reddit and 4Chan phenomenon. Now, Parsons is 20, and the youngest person ever to direct a movie for A24. Ahead of the upcoming release of Backrooms, we sat down with Parsons to discuss the evolution of the cultural phenomenon.

Inde Navarrette is obsessed with a lot right now. The first thing is her nails, butter yellow tips dotted with silver gems to replicate eyebrow piercings, that she playfully flashes on a Zoom call from her high-rise apartment in New York. Then there’s Fourth Wing, the fantasy series from author Rebecca Yarros, which she recently finished reading. And finally, a perhaps surprising but fun activity: playing pool with her friends.

Revenge is, in a way, the plate on which the Star Wars universe spins. It’s this need to avenge his mother, and Palpatine’s exploitation of it, that begins Anakin Skywalker’s fall. It’s the retaliation against centuries of exile that results in Order 66 and the decimation of the Jedi Order.
