It’s been nearly 600 days since the L.A. fires became one of the most destructive in U.S. history, yet the federal government has still not appropriated more than $15 billion in long-term recovery funds to help survivors get back home. That’s longer than the previous record of 500 days survivors of the Maui fires had to wait, according to After the Fire USA. “ It’s really like nothing we’ve ever seen before,” said Jennifer Gray Thompson, the nonprofit’s founder and CEO.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means to me being a translator of experience of sorts. When we're put in a position of understanding each other, we can truly empathize

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I believe in the power of storytelling to cause change, whether that change occurs in one person's heart, or across an entire system.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes, I started as a reporter then became Editor-in-Chief
