Inside the White House, Secretary of State Marco Rubio cycled through a series of arguments aimed at persuading President Donald Trump to get behind regime change in Venezuela. The one that finally landed was drug trafficking. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, Rubio argued, was killing Americans by trafficking fentanyl and cocaine into the country, which resonated with Trump’s long-established opposition to drug use.
Inside Marco Rubio's Push for Regime Change in Venezuela
U.S. intelligence has assessed that little to none of the fentanyl trafficked to the United States is being produced in Venezuela, despite recent claims from the Trump administration, a senior U.S. official directly familiar with the matter tells Drop Site. The official noted that many of the boats targeted for strikes by the Trump administration do not even have the requisite gasoline or motor capacity to reach U.S. waters, dramatically undercutting claims by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

Does Populism Matter?
REVIEW ESSAY The People, No: A Brief History of Anti-Populism by Thomas Frank Metropolitan Books, 2020, 320 pages The UK’s decision to leave the European Union and the rise of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump in 2016, along with previous developments such as the election of Narenda Modi in India and the rise of right‑populist parties in Hungary and Poland, set the stage for a widely held political narrative of the last five years: the populist moment is here and it is not going away.
Planet of the Grifters
The word “grifter” seems to be on the tip of everyone’s tongue today. On the left, grifters are identified and called out with ever-increasing paranoia. On the right, the term is thrown around with almost equal ease, and often with good cause. The grifter is a threat to every movement; he lurks in every shadow. Even the most honest and laudable political causes are seemingly powerless in the face of the grifter’s corrupting influence.
H.R. 1 Is a Threat to American Democracy. Period.
There are many vulnerabilities in the American election system. These vulnerabilities need to be fixed. Unfortunately, H.R. 1—the “For the People Act of 2021,” which recently passed in the House without a single Republican vote, and is now before the Senate—is not the way to do it. Indeed, H.R. 1 would make things much worse, usurping the role of the states, wiping out basic safety protocols, and mandating a set of rules that would severely damage the integrity of the election process.

What Will The GOP Look Like After Trump?
Sign up to receive The Commons posts in your inbox. How The Elites Rigged Supreme Court Politics
The death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg less than 50 days before the 2020 election has dramatically increased the stakes of the election, and is exactly the type of September surprise that could scramble Americans’ voting patterns this late in the game. What it underscores however is how we’re all getting played by the elites of this country who have designed the system exactly this way in order to remove even the illusion of choice from our lives.
