The transcription factor Nrf2 (nuclear factor erythroid-derived-2-like 2) is a key mediator of the anti-oxidant response. Nrf2 can be activated by alkylating its chaperone, Keap-1, resulting in a retardation of Nrf2 degradation, and increased Nrf2 in the cytoplasm. Upon translocation to the nucleus, Nrf2 binds an Antioxidant Response Element (ARE), which leads to the transcription of antioxidant gene products, many of which may be cytoprotective.
