At a recent meeting of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission, which I chair, I asked staff if we could have members of the public to show me on a map where they would like development in our community to take place. What we heard for hours — as we often do — was categorical, overwhelming opposition to development. No one seems to want anything built in their own backyard; that's been clear for years.

A popular form of entertainment, gambling has long been a component of human civilization. People bet for the excitement of the game and the chance to win cash or prizes in everything from card games to slot machines. When gambling turns into an addiction, though, it may have serious negative effects on people and their families. I believe that moderation is the key to enjoying gambling without negative consequences.

Former President Donald Trump’s Manhattan hush money trial begins today, and Fox News’ bogus defense is well underway — with the network’s flagship morning show, Fox & Friends, suggesting there’s no “underlying crime” at the root of the case. Trump has been charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in order to conceal a payment made to Stormy Daniels, a porn star who claims to have had an affair with the former president, in the days before the 2016 presidential election.
