UT Vols blame kick-return woes on wind, pouring rain in loss to LSU
As if LSU wasn't tough enough, Tennessee on Saturday night faced another difficult opponent: Mother Nature. The windy conditions factored into two Marquez Callaway turnovers on punts in the first half. Then a monsoon-like downpour contributed greatly to botched kickoff to start the second half. Callaway's turnovers led to 10 points by LSU (8-3, 5-2 SEC). The kickoff flipped field position and helped set up a Tigers scoring drive in their 30-10 victory at Neyland Stadium.
How to watch, listen, live stream UT vs. LSU football game
Tennessee will play in prime time on Saturday against LSU, but is little deserving of top billing. Kickoff is 7 p.m. on ESPN. The Vols (4-6, 0-6 SEC) have not won a game in the SEC, are in danger of ending their three-year streak of playing in a bowl game and could become the first team in UT history to lose eight games. Oh, and UT fired coach Butch Jones on Sunday after a humiliating loss at Missouri the day before.
John Currie seeks replacement for Butch Jones
Tennessee football coach Butch Jones was fired on Sunday after five seasons with the Vols. Jones went 34-27 during his tenure, including a 14-24 record in the SEC. Athletic director John Currie promised an "exhaustive search" to find Jones' replacement. Here's the latest on the coaching search. The Gruden-to-Tennessee rumors have gone on for so many years that they have a name of their own: Grumors. As expected, with the Tennessee job open, the Grumor mill is in full swing.
Tennessee football looks as bad as LSU remembers it
COLUMBIA, Mo. — Tennessee and LSU haven’t played since 2011. But in one respect, the Vols haven’t changed. They struggled then. They're struggling now. More: Vols have LSU Tigers up next In fact, they have struggled so badly that fifth-year coach Butch Jones was fired after Saturday's 50-17 loss to Missouri left the Vols at 4-6 overall and winless in the SEC. Interim coach Brady Hoke now has the challenge of preparing them to face LSU on Saturday night at Neyland Stadium.
UT Vols players discuss Butch Jones firing, Brady Hoke takeover
When Tennessee players were called to a team meeting at 1 p.m. Sunday, Tennessee kicker Aaron Medley suspected the team would be told Butch Jones had been fired. News of Jones’ ouster broke in the morning, and many of the players no doubt had read those reports. The players received official word at the meeting. “It was weird,” Medley said of Sunday. “He came in. He thanked us. He was very personable,” Medley said. “I wish him well.
Dan Mullen, asked about the Vols' opening, says he loves the job he has at Mississippi St.
Dan Mullen has been on the wish list for some Tennessee fans long before the Vols fired coach Butch Jones on Sunday. It's understandable why UT fans would be intrigued by Mullen. He has a 68-45 record in nine seasons at Mississippi State. Mullen was asked Monday at his news conference how the attractiveness of the Tennessee job compares to the job he has. "I love the one I have," Mullen told reporters in Starkville. "I think what you see is what we’ve been able to build Mississippi State into.

Tennessee fires Butch Jones in fifth season as football coach, Brady Hoke named interim coach
The Butch Jones era is over after five seasons in which he restored Tennessee's program to respectability, only to watch it regress this year after back-to-back nine-win seasons. Under Jones, the Vols didn't achieve the success they experienced in the 1990s. Jones struggled to win consistently within the SEC, especially against rivals Florida, Georgia and Alabama.

Tennessee Vols have LSU Tigers up next
COLUMBIA, Mo. — LSU has turned its season around since an embarrassing loss to Troy on Sept. 30. The No. 21 Tigers (7-3, 4-2 SEC) have won four of their past five games entering their game against Tennessee (4-6, 0-6) on Saturday (7 p.m. ET, ESPN). Most recently, LSU whipped Arkansas 33-10 behind a three touchdown-performance from running back Derrius Guice, who is fully out of Leonard Fournette's shadow and having a fine junior season.

Vols: Will McBride's TD, John Kelly's penalty among game's best, worst
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Tennessee laid another brick in its disappointing season on Saturday night, when the Vols were whipped 50-17 by Missouri – a team that entered the night with a losing record. Tennessee (4-6, 0-6 SEC) has lost seven straight conference games. Missouri (5-5, 2-4) extended its winning streak to four. Here are the high points and low moments. McBride showed moxie throughout his first start as a true freshman in place of the injured Jarrett Guarantano.
Vols football gashed on the ground in blowout loss at Missouri
COLUMBIA, Mo. — Early in the third quarter, there was an announcement in the Missouri press box. Missouri running back Ish Witter had broken the 100-yard mark, giving the Tigers two running backs with more than 100 yards in the same game for the first time since … Tennessee and Missouri played last season. It was much of the same for Vols this time around, with their run defense gashed time and time again by the Tigers in a 50-17 blowout defeat.
4-star Tennessee Vols quarterback commit visiting Ohio State University
Four-star senior quarterback Adrian Martinez of Clovis West High School in Fresno, Calif., a Tennessee commitment, confirmed to GoVols247 on Saturday that he has arrived at Ohio State for an official visit with the Buckeyes. The 6-foot-2, 198-pound Martinez has been committed to the Vols for nearly six months and previously had indicated that he's firmly committed to Tennessee.
ESPN's Jon Gruden won't rule out a return to coaching college football
With embattled Tennessee coach Butch Jones facing an uncertain future, rumors again have started to circulate connecting former Super Bowl champion coach Jon Gruden to the Vols’ potential opening. More: Vols haven't been elite this millennium; they've been Missouri It’s hardly the first time Gruden, who’s now an analyst for ESPN’s “Monday Night Football,” has been mentioned as a possible candidate for a coaching vacancy.
Has Tennessee AD John Currie seen enough to fire Vols coach Butch Jones now?
COLUMBIA, Mo. – At the risk of repeating myself, how much more of this does Tennessee athletic director John Currie have to see to announce Butch Jones has coached his last game at UT? Does the entire defense have to crawl into a fetal position before an opponent snaps the ball? Does an offensive player have to carry the football into the wrong end zone? Butch’s bricks continued to crumble Saturday evening at Faurot Field.
Missouri 50, Tennessee 17: Vols allow 33 unanswered points
Tennessee and Missouri entered their game against each other with the same record, but Saturday proved they're trending in the opposite direction. The Tigers scored 33 straight points en route to a 50-17 laugher, continuing the Vols' debacle of a season. Missouri (5-5, 2-4 SEC) has won four straight. The Vols (4-6, 0-6) have a seven-game SEC losing streak that dates back to last season.
Tennessee Vols: Will McBride will start at QB against Missouri
COLUMBIA, Mo. – True freshman quarterback Will McBride will make his first career for Tennessee's game against Missouri on Saturday night. McBride takes the place of Jarrett Guarantano, who injured his right ankle in last week's game against Southern Mississippi and played less than half the game in the Vols' 24-10 victory. McBride made his debut in relief of Guarantano in that game and completed 1-of-8 passes, though he was hampered by a few drops.
Tennessee basketball holds Presbyterian scoreless nearly 10 minutes in opening-night rout
The points denied by the Vols, though, during a prolonged stretch might be a more hopeful indicator of the season ahead. UT held Presbyterian scoreless for 9:45 of the first half, setting in motion an 88-53 victory before a crowd of 15,047 at Thompson-Boling Arena. Presbyterian actually scored the first basket when Davon Bell floated in a driving shot over two Tennessee defenders with 18:26 left in the first half.
Tennessee football vs Missouri prediction: Who has the edge
Missouri’s Drew Lock has put up impressive numbers, most of which were compiled against the weakest opponents on the schedule. However, he also played well against Georgia, completing 15 of 25 passes for 253 yards and four touchdowns. If UT gives him time and allows him to get in a groove, he could shred its secondary. Tennessee quarterback Jarrett Guarantano is a "game-time decision" after missing the second half of the Southern Miss game with an ankle injury.
Vols haven't been elite this millennium; they've been Missouri
Here’s a comparison of two teams’ résumés from 2000-16: The résumés are nearly identical over that span of 17 seasons. Team B is the Vols’ next opponent, Missouri. Even this year, the résumés are similar, with both teams entering Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network) at 4-5. Tennessee is 0-5 in SEC play; Missouri is 1-4.
Tennessee Lady Vols: Freshmen, departed players factor into different feel for season
Tennessee’s 2017-18 women’s basketball team adds up as being quite different than the previous edition. For starters, four freshmen have joined the Lady Vols’ ranks. Evina Westbrook, Anastasia Hayes, Rennia Davis and Kasi Kushkituah collaborated on quite the first impression, too. They accounted for 76 points and 30 rebounds in an exhibition dress rehearsal against Carson-Newman on Tuesday.
Lady Vols basketball follows No. 1 signing class with a top-5 in 2018
After signing the top-ranked recruiting class last season, Tennessee has delivered a worthy women’s basketball encore. ProspectsNation.com ranked UT's four signees — Amira Collins, Jazmine Massengill, Zarielle Green and Rae Burrell — as of Friday as the third-best class of 2018. ESPN HoopGurlz rated the group fifth overall. "I am really pleased that we were able to address a lot of needs with this class," UT coach Holly Warlick said in a university release.
Tennessee Lady Vols softball 2018 signing class is ranked No. 2 in the country
Four years ago, while on a recruiting trip to southern California, Ralph and Karen Weekly went into an Outback Steakhouse for a meal and came out with a cornerstone for their 2018 signing class. The Tennessee softball co-head coaches built on that momentum and landed the No. 2 class in the country (according to the FloSoftball rating service). UCLA owned the top spot. Auburn was third, defending NCAA champion Oklahoma was fourth and Florida, last year’s runner-up, was fifth.
Vols basketball has 'gotta get better' with season-opener coming Friday
Rick Barnes likes his team’s depth and defensive ability compared to years past as he enters his third season as the Tennessee coach. But with the Vols season-opener coming Friday night, Barnes wants to see his team “continue to get better in everything we’re doing.” “I know we are doing good stuff, but we’ve gotta get better,” Barnes said.
Tennessee Vols vs. Missouri predictions? Our experts except for one picking Tigers
If redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano isn't ready to start at quarterback for Tennessee it will be freshman Will McBride. And even if Guarantano starts, there's a good possibility that McBride will be under center at some point. It's UT's QB shaky situation and Missouri's offense led by QB Drew Lock that our experts are using to decide Saturday's winner in Columbia, Mo. Only one brave soul is picking the Vols, even though the Tigers are at least a 10-point favorite.
Vols Kelly, Ignont set for December court hearing on drug citations
Tennessee running back John Kelly and linebacker Will Ignont are set to return to court next month to face misdemeanor drug charges. On Thursday, Knox County General Sessions Court Judge Chuck Cerny scheduled a preliminary hearing for Dec. 13. Neither player appeared in the courtroom. The charges stem from an Oct. 24 traffic stop on Cumberland Avenue near 11th Street, when police searched the vehicle the two were traveling in after officers allegedly smelled marijuana coming from the car.
Vols should find motivation in possible Birmingham, Liberty bowl trip
Tennessee's football season hasn't turned out as expected. But despite a disappointing 4-5 record, the Vols won't be lacking in incentive as they head down the stretch for a ... well, let's call it a three-game playoff. With three games remaining, the Vols are only two victories away from bowl eligibility. How about a trip across the state to Memphis for the Liberty Bowl? It's still in play.
Tennessee football vs Missouri: Cuonzo Martin, Drew Lock among 5 things to know
Tennessee hasn’t won a true road football game since Jauan Jennings caught a Hail Mary pass on the final play at Georgia on Oct. 1 last season. Vols basketball blending old newcomers and young veterans in backcourt
James Daniel III and Chris Darrington faced a funny realization when they set foot on campus at Tennessee. The transfer duo qualifies simultaneously the old guys and the new guys on the Vols’ basketball team, members of two opposite groups. That reality left the duo willingly accepting they had plenty to learn, but they also brought as much to teach in a backcourt that combines old newcomers and young veterans. “It has been a two-way street,” said Darrington, a junior college transfer.
Vols coach Butch Jones: Recruiting 'in flux every single minute'
A day after Tennessee’s top commitment Cade Mays decommitted, coach Butch Jones said “recruiting in general is a great challenge.” “It’s forged by relationships over time,” Jones said Wednesday. “It’s in flux every single minute, every single hour and every single day in the world that we live in in terms of recruiting.” Tennessee’s recruiting class took a massive hit on Tuesday when Mays, a 5-star offensive lineman, announced he was decommitting from the Vols.

Butch Jones' status not only mystery for Tennessee football

My word would be “mysterious.” More: Tennessee Vols will face Missouri Tigers next The biggest mystery regards Tennessee coach Butch Jones. Since the end of September, there have been questions about his job status. And the questions have changed only slightly during a season that now has three games remaining.
Bass Cooper proves 6-year-old self right, signs with Tennessee Vols baseball
Michele Davis put her hand on her son's arm to stop him. "Are you sure?" she asked him. Davis and Bass Cooper both laughed; he had been sure about committing to Tennessee since he was 6 years old. It was back then that his father, Blu, took Cooper out of school for UT's baseball home opener. It was a cold day – Blu said about 25 degrees – and the stadium was nearly empty.
Butch Jones: Vols QB Jarrett Guarantano will be 'game-time decision' for game against Mizzou
Whether Tennessee quarterback Jarrett Guarantano plays against Missouri on Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network) will be based on how well he can maneuver in the pocket and whether he can escape the pocket if needed, coach Butch Jones said Wednesday on the “Vol Calls” radio show. “That will be pretty much a game-time decision,” Jones said on the radio show. “He’s got to be able to move the pocket and change the launch points and all that,” Jones added.
Tennessee football: turnovers starting to fall Vols' way
The Tennessee trash can has lost much of the notoriety it received during the Vols' season opener against Georgia Tech, when it became a social media sensation. No matter, the place where footballs are deposited after the Vols generate a turnover still is open for business, defensive end Kyle Phillips assured on Monday. And business has been good lately.

She became the fourth player to join UT’s recruiting class. The fall signing period for letters of intent begins on Wednesday. Guard Zarielle Green from Duncanville, Texas, committed to the Lady Vols two weeks ago, a day after her official visit concluded.
