Interview

Why did you become a journalist?

During a gap year working and traveling in Argentina, I broke out of my shell and found a passion for talking to and learning about people.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

My Montessori school was too small to run a newspaper, but I did intern for a week at Black Press Media's Oak Bay News in Grade 9.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Fight for what interests you. Don't be put off when others laugh at the work you're passionate about. It doesn't have to be a crowd-pleaser.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Probably when a local biologist informed me that the federal government would soon release a report on how off-leash dogs peril shorebirds.

What's your favorite drink?

Alcoholic? Always a gin and tonic. Non-alcoholic? Any black tea with milk.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

In the kitchen steeping tea or out for a nice, long, contemplative walk!

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Easily the New York Times, with their long-form investigative pieces on climate change and declining Indigenous cultures in Brazil's Amazon.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

People may not realize that climate change reporting isn't always doom and gloom. There are positives and successes we can celebrate as well.
