Shared household environment structures the gut microbiota in a large family cohort with central areolar choroidal dystrophy
Abstract Central areolar choroidal dystrophy (CACD) is a rare monogenic hereditary retinal dystrophy characterised by progressive retinal pigment epithelium and choriocapillaris atrophy, photoreceptor loss, oxidative stress, and chronic inflammation. Emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiota can modulate systemic inflammatory responses and may influence ocular health through the gut-eye axis. However, the contribution of the gut microbiota to CACD remains unexplored.

Microbiome-based environmental monitoring of a dairy processing facility highlights the challenges associated with low microbial-load samples
Abstract Efficient and accurate identification of microorganisms throughout the food chain can potentially allow the identification of sources of contamination and the timely implementation of control measures. High throughput DNA sequencing represents a potential means through which microbial monitoring can be enhanced.
Outbreak of acute larval cyathostominosis - A “perfect storm” of inflammation and dysbiosis
Abstract Background Cyathostomins are prevalent and pathogenic intestinal helminths of horses, causing acute and chronic disease, including acute larval cyathostominosis, which has a mortality rate of 50%. Factors determining individual susceptibility to acute larval cyathostominosis are unknown. Investigation of these factors could lead to novel treatment and prevention strategies.

The dynamics of the antibiotic resistome in the feces of freshly weaned pigs following therapeutic administration of oxytetracycline
Abstract In this study, shotgun metagenomics was employed to monitor the effect of oxytetracycline, administered at a therapeutic dose, on the dynamics of the microbiota and resistome in the feces of weaned pigs. Sixteen weaning pigs were assigned to one of two treatments including standard starter diet for 21 days or antibiotic-supplemented diet (10 g oxytetracycline/100 kg body weight/day) for 7 days, followed by 14 days of standard starter diet.
Microbial Succession and Flavor Production in the Fermented Dairy Beverage Kefir
IMPORTANCE Traditional fermented foods represent relatively low-complexity microbial environments that can be used as model microbial communities to understand how microbes interact in natural environments. Our results illustrate the dynamic nature of kefir fermentations and microbial succession patterns therein.
