Back in my second or third year of teaching, there was a seven-year-old boy who always wanted to write about football. Any time I allowed “free story-writing”, he gave me a page of large, closely-written narrative in which his favoured team (was it Man U? I can’t remember now) scored one goal in the first half and one goal in the second half. There was never an own goal, a red card, a disallowed goal or a penalty. It was always a standard 2:0 win, and always for the right team.

This is a book review. There’s an important book I believe everyone in the 21st century needs to read. It’s only 155 words long, hardly TL:DR; and it’s easy to find. Give David McKee a robe and sandals and a long wooden walking-staff, because this book is prophetic.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

When I was 15 I bought a Silver Reed manual typewriter and learned to touch-type. That has proved a useful skill to me as an author.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I write with a pen on paper. Then I type it up. I do not use writing aids. Why would I need them?

Who do you wish followed you?

I'd like the education authorities and the writers of the Scottish curriculum to read my opinion column.
