Abstract While hyperbolic phonon-polaritons in van der Waals materials such as h-BN and α-MoO3 have driven major advances in mid-infrared (IR) nanophotonics, further progress at longer THz wavelengths has been hampered due to material limitations and experimental challenges. Here, we report the discovery of long-lived hyperbolic phonon-polaritons in the deep THz range in layered PbI2.

Two-dimensional talc as a natural hyperbolic material

Abstract This study demonstrates that two-dimensional talc, a naturally abundant mineral, supports hyperbolic phonon-polaritons (HPhPs) at mid-infrared wavelengths, thus offering a low-cost alternative to synthetic polaritonic materials. Using scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and synchrotron infrared nano spectroscopy (SINS), we reveal tunable HPhP modes in talc flakes of a long lifetime.

Guidelines for Engineering Directional Polariton Launchers

Abstract Nanophotonic devices based on two-dimensional crystals enable various technological applications, ranging from biosensing to quantum communication. In those devices, plasmonic antennas have been extensively explored in the photon-polariton conversion, as they allow field confinement within subdiffraction volumes.
