Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have gained significant importance since the isolation of atomically thin crystals became possible, (1) leading to a new class of layered 2D materials. These monolayers, only a few atoms thick, are covalently bonded in the xy plane and held together by weak out-of-plane van der Waals (vdW) forces, forming van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) when stacked.
