Germany’s EV share hits record 37% as BEVs beat gas and diesel combined
Battery-electric cars took a record 37% of Germany’s new car market in October, according to data released today by the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), the country’s federal motor vehicle authority. That’s 94,086 BEVs, up 79.5% from 52,425 a year earlier. For the second month in a row, German buyers registered more fully electric cars than gasoline and diesel cars combined. And with two months left in the year, Germany has already blown past the auto industry’s EV forecast for all of 2026.

Xiaomi’s humanoid robots work a full 8-hour shift in its EV factory
Xiaomi has released footage of its humanoid robots working a full 8-hour shift at its EV factory, sorting center console side covers for its cars. The company says the robots did it on their own, catching and fixing their own mistakes along the way. If that’s fully autonomous, it’s truly impressive. But we’ve been disappointed by humanoid robot demos before, and Xiaomi left out the numbers that would let anyone check.

Tesla accused of selling FSD to Korean owners who can’t legally use it
A South Korean consumer group is asking regulators to stop Tesla from marketing “Full Self-Driving” to customers whose cars can’t legally run it. By Tesla’s own numbers, that covers 99% of the Teslas it sold in Korea last year. Citizens United for Consumer Sovereignty plans to file the complaint with the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) on Thursday, according to Reuters, which reviewed it. It comes just a week after a Seoul court threw out a refund lawsuit from Korean owners who paid for FSD.

Tesla cuts FSD’s speed margin from 50% to 10% over the limit in Europe
Tesla’s driver-assistance system in Europe can no longer be set to drive 50% over the speed limit. The Netherlands’ RDW, which approved the system in April, confirmed today that it signed off on an update capping the speed margin at 10% and officially renaming “FSD Supervised” to Tesla Assisted Driving. The changes land weeks before EU member states could vote on approving the system across the bloc, and they match the conditions Germany set last month.
Tesla wins trade zone status for Texas Megapacks, but China tariffs stay
Tesla’s Megapack factory in Brookshire, Texas, is now officially a foreign-trade zone, a US customs program that lets manufacturers defer duties on imported parts. The FTZ Board’s approval, published in the Federal Register on Monday, runs for 14 months. It’s easy to read this as Tesla getting a pass on tariffs for the Chinese LFP cells inside its Megapacks. Tesla’s own application says otherwise: parts hit by Section 301, 232, or 122 tariffs still pay them.
Tesla Powerwall 3 now boosts heat pumps to store cheap solar as heat Original
Tesla has launched Heat Pump Optimization, a feature that lets the Powerwall 3 and three-phase Powerwall 3P tell a compatible heat pump when to run harder so a home can bank cheap or surplus solar energy as hot water. It’s live in Europe only. Tesla hasn’t said anything about bringing it to the US or Canada, and the hardware standard it relies on barely exists on this side of the Atlantic.

Electric trucks hit 50% of China’s heavy truck sales, diesel demand falls Original
Electric trucks made up 50.3% of all heavy trucks sold in China in September. That’s 33,100 electric big rigs in a single month, up 37% from a year ago, while the overall heavy-truck market shrank by 21%. And it’s showing up in the oil data. China’s diesel demand is on track to fall by about 230,000 barrels per day this year, and trucks running on batteries and natural gas are doing most of the work. In 2024, new-energy vehicles accounted for 13.6% of heavy trucks (12 tonnes and up) sold in China.

Tesla drops car referral rewards, now pays owners in FSD for referrals Original
Tesla has launched a new referral program in the US that pays owners in Full Self-Driving (Supervised) instead of rewarding car sales. A referred owner gets one free month of FSD, and the referrer gets a free month or a $99 Tesla Credit if that person starts paying. At the same time, Tesla’s Refer and Earn terms no longer list any vehicle as a qualifying purchase for buyer or referrer rewards. Buy a Tesla with a friend’s code today and neither of you gets anything.

Waymo picks Toyota bZ4X as its next robotaxi, starting in Japan in 2027 Original
Waymo is adding the Toyota bZ4X to its robotaxi lineup. Toyota will build a custom version of the electric SUV with the Waymo Driver integrated right on the line in Japan, and a test fleet will start operating there in 2027. It’s the first actual vehicle to come out of the partnership the two companies signed last year. And it gives Waymo a Japanese-built car for its Tokyo launch, with the UK and other markets to follow.
Rivian’s electric van gets 30% more range and AWD, now delivering Original
Rivian Commercial Van (Source: Rivian) Rivian has started delivering the first major hardware upgrade to its electric van since production began in 2021: a bigger LFP battery pack good for 30% more range, and a new dual-motor AWD version. The company confirmed in its Q3 2026 shareholder presentation that deliveries of the new variants began in early October. That’s the first real spec bump for a van that has been stuck at about 160 miles of rated range for years.
Rivian (RIVN) Q3 2026 earnings: revenue up 38%, R2 now its best-seller
Rivian (RIVN) just released its Q3 2026 earnings, with revenue up 38% year-over-year to $2.155 billion. The R2, in its first full quarter of deliveries, is already the company’s best-selling vehicle, ahead of both the R1 and the Amazon van. The results beat Wall Street’s expectations, and Rivian is raising its 2026 guidance on every metric. But the car business is still losing money, and the R2 ramp made the automotive margin worse this quarter. We already had the volume side.
Ex-Tesla Autopilot head calls vision-only a ‘weird religious stance’
GM Chief Product Officer Sterling Anderson, who ran Tesla’s Autopilot program in 2015 and 2016, says dropping radar for a camera-only self-driving system is “a weird religious stance that ignores physics.” It’s the bluntest rebuke of Tesla’s vision-only bet yet from someone who helped build the original Autopilot. And it lands while Tesla is pushing camera-only Cybercabs into driverless service in Austin.

BYD (BYDDY) Q3 profit jumps 28% on exports, but inventory balloons 60% Original
BYD second-generation Seagull EV (Source: Zhang Zhuo) BYD’s Q3 2026 earnings are out, and net profit jumped 28% year-over-year to ¥10.02 billion as the Chinese automaker shipped more than half a million vehicles out of the country in just three months. But the rest of the filing is messier. BYD’s inventory is up 60% since January, its cash pile has shrunk by almost half, and profit is still down for the first nine months of the year.

BYD dealership in Thailand (Source: BYD) BYD now has more than 1.02 million employees, according to chairman Wang Chuanfu. That’s more people than Toyota, GM, Ford, and Tesla employ combined. And it’s a big jump from the start of the year. BYD reported about 869,600 employees at the end of 2025, which means the Chinese automaker has added roughly 150,000 people in 10 months while its vehicle sales are down. Roughly 960,000 of BYD’s people work in China and about 60,000 work abroad.

Dems introduce new $15,000 EV tax credit bill that has no chance — and that’s a problem
Rep. Greg Landsman (D-OH) wants to bring back the federal EV tax credit and double it. His new bill, the “21st Century Vehicle Choice Act” (H.R. 10881), would offer up to $15,000 on a new electric vehicle and $8,000 on a used one, and it would make both credits permanent. The problem is that the bill has virtually no chance of becoming law anytime soon. And if EV shoppers start holding out for it, it could end up hurting the market it’s trying to help. Landsman introduced H.R. 10881 on October 22.

Ford casts 5,000 ‘unicastings’ for Fathom EV truck in Tesla-style shift
A Ford team member inspects a Fathom unicasting (Image: Ford) Ford has now produced more than 5,000 large aluminum “unicastings” for the Fathom, its upcoming $28,350 midsize electric pickup, as it fine-tunes the process ahead of a 2027 launch. Each truck gets two of them, front and rear, replacing 146 individual parts. It’s the clearest sign yet that Ford is all-in on the manufacturing approach Tesla popularized with its Giga Press six years ago.
Tesla’s rocket-shaped Robotaxi map in Houston is partly ‘fake’ Original
Image: Tesla Tesla’s new rocket-shaped Robotaxi service area in Houston includes parts of downtown where the service won’t actually pick you up, according to Ethan McKanna, the creator of Robotaxi Tracker and former Tesla employee. McKanna rode the service after Monday’s expansion and called Houston “by far the most egregious ‘fake’ AV service area” he has seen. One trip quote had him spending about 40 minutes in a Robotaxi to go two blocks.
Tesla confirms Vietnam entry to take on VinFast and its 36% market share Original
Tesla has started hiring in Vietnam, and one of its recruiters says the company is now “officially coming” to the country. The five open roles include a sales manager, a service manager, and a charging project developer. It’s a tough market to walk into. VinFast, the local all-electric automaker, has sold roughly 36% of every new car in Vietnam this year, more than its next five competitors combined.

Tesla Semi catches fire on I-880 with no crash, closes freeway for 10 hours
Photo: CHP Hayward A Tesla Semi caught fire on Interstate 880 in Hayward, California, on Tuesday evening, and there was no crash. The electric truck’s lithium-ion battery burned long enough to keep the southbound freeway closed for about 10 hours. The driver got out unhurt. But a Class 8 electric truck catching fire on its own, in traffic, is something Tesla and its growing list of Semi customers need to explain. The fire broke out at around 5:35 p.m. PT in the southbound lanes near Route 92.
