Zilian holds a Ph.D. in international relations/strategic studies from the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University. COLUMNS Fred Zilian Guest columnist April 29, 2026, 6:04 a.m. ET Two hundred and fifty years ago, British, German and Loyalist forces landed and occupied Aquidneck Island, beginning a nearly three-year occupation with devastating consequences for Newport and the rest of the island and its people. After abandoning Boston in March 1776, and invading New York in August, the British decided to seize and occupy Aquidneck Island and Narragansett Bay for several reasons.
