Substack — Ithaca is a "gorges" city, and with 150 waterfalls within a 10-mile radius, it comes by its moniker honestly. Within the city limits itself, a one-third mile hike uphill - the Cascadilla Gorge Trail -- was not only exhilarating because of the trek itself, but for the vastness and variety of six different freely flowing floes of cascading waterfalls.

Ghost Tours in St. Augustine, FL

Ghost Tours in St. Augustine, FL

Substack.com — At 450+ years, St. Augustine, Florida is America's oldest city. There's a lot to recommend a city that old -- history, ancient (for the states) architecture, Spanish culture. And, of course, ghosts. A city that old has a lot of history to haunt -- a lot of death and despair to permeate the landscape -- and the spirits of St.

Substack.com — I'm in Cairo, Egypt on a hotel balcony overlooking the Nile River, a fantasy land I've heard about my whole life - and I'm here. I needed to take a minute - and revel in that.

Walk Japan: Exploring the Head, the Heart and the Soul of a Country

Tripatini — It is not often that a toilet and a tea ceremony form perfect metaphors for the culture of a country, but so it is in Japan. The toilet falls into the realm of delightful personal discoveries - albeit all of them in the hotel bathroom of the Kyoto Park Hotel.

The most virulent strain of the Bubonic Plague has immobilized Edinburgh, Scotland, claiming the lives of more than half the city's population. The area hardest hit: Mary King's Close on High Street, a busy thoroughfare and lively 17th century street of pubs, shops, and residences.

Substack.com — Naturally we started our trip off with a glass of wine at lunch. After all, it was too late for breakfast... "Deux verres de vin rouge - um, uh -- pas sec. Un peu..." Finally I just threw my hands in the air and laughed.

De Palm Island, Aruba: A Reservoir of Riches Above and Below Water

Substack.com — I've always envied my scuba-diving friends who describe their colorful underwater world full of coral reefs and multiple inhabitants of the sea as magical. I've snorkeled but it's not the same. Now, although I remain uncertified as a diver, I have an idea of what the majesty is all about thanks to my SNUBA experience at Aruba's De Palm Island.

Fun in the Water and on Land at Great Wolf Lodge, by Travel Writers

Creators — By Fyllis Hockman "You want me to get on that and go down to where?" I wailed from high atop the Alberta Falls waterslide, looking down to an alleged pool that was well out of visual range. My 11-year-old granddaughter nodded with a look of both consternation and resignation that I tried very hard to take in stride.

Creators — By Fyllis Hockman The last 18 miles of the road leading to the Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica, full of ruts and potholes by design, takes more than an hour and a half to navigate, and the locals like it that way.

Sipping Vino and Savoring Vistas in Tuscany, by Travel Writers

Sipping Vino and Savoring Vistas in Tuscany, by Travel Writers

Creators — By Fyllis Hockman Wandering the hilly, narrow cobblestone streets in our home base of Montalcino, Italy, a medieval city of interlocking passageways, steps and alleyways curving around and through and behind and beyond the main square, I reminded myself I was walking through history that spanned 800 years.

Take the Winding Highway to Hana, by Travel Writers

Creators — By Fyllis Hockman Just as the queasiness in my stomach from the continuous onslaught of curves and cutbacks along the narrow uphill road began to subside, we rounded yet another 180-degree bend. The first waterfall with whipped-cream waters dripping down deep-creviced cleavages appeared by the roadside, its beauty washing away all my remaining reservations.

Creators — By Fyllis Hockman "You want me to go where?" my mind shouted as I barreled down a 90-degree angle that led into a wall of mud- and gravel-encased woods. I was driving - or more accurately surviving - an ATV excursion at Primland in Meadows of Dan, Virginia.

Planet Word: Where Words Rule the World, by Travel Writers

Planet Word: Where Words Rule the World, by Travel Writers

Creators — By Fyllis Hockman I'm a travel writer. Words are what I do. My stories may not always sing, but I usually can put one word in front of another succinctly enough to craft a well-written article. But when I heard about the newly opened Planet Word in Washington, D.C., I was so excited, I had no words.

Underwater and Overwater Animal Encounters in Curacao, by Travel Writers

Creators — By Fyllis Hockman Their bodies were sleek and graceful, the skin soft to the touch, their demeanor welcoming even if a bit skeptical. Still, they were more used to this than I was. I spread my arms out as instructed and flapped them in the water.
