Pandemic exposes America’s irrational obsession with growth
In my last column, shortly before classes were canceled and campus closed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, I pointed out that the U.S. was setting itself up for a public health disaster because of the nearly absurd inadequacy of its response to the coronavirus. Like many others writing then and now, I laid the blame at the feet of the conservatives in state and federal governments who have systematically gutted the capacity of the U.S. to care for its citizens, in a crisis or not.
Disastrous coronavirus response shows the failure of conservative policies
As the University’s travel and event policies constrict under the threat of a new coronavirus outbreak, it can be easy to get distracted by chatter over whether or not classes will be canceled, rather than stepping back and looking at the epidemic in a broader context. Yet even a cursory look at the national response in the United States makes clear that the coronavirus is being catastrophically mishandled.
It’s time for University to cut ties with climate deniers
Brown is an outlier when it comes to mobilizing on climate change — but not always in a good way. While we have an ambitious plan to reduce our campus emissions, we lag behind other universities and institutions in many other matters that count.
Activists Must Sever Links Between Climate Crisis and Big Tech
The most exciting contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination are those with the boldest diagnoses of our country’s malaise. On the one hand, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) fixate on the deepening climate crisis and the power of the elite class.
Liberals need to think beyond horse race politics
Watching liberal political commentators talk about the 2020 presidential election, one starts to wonder whether the world will even continue to exist should Democrats lose. Trump’s victory four years ago was already hailed by European populists as an “apocalypse” for the centrist-liberal political mainstream; this time, headlines cry that four more years of Trump may just be apocalyptic, period. How exactly the world might end doesn’t seem to matter.
Don’t legitimize climate denial
Peter Kropotkin was a Russian aristocrat, political agitant, contemporary of Marx and radical anarcho-communist. Besides being an all-time great class traitor, he also had a passion for science. My favorite work of his is a book called “Mutual Aid,” a collection of essays written during the late 19th century.
Ban oil money, recruiters from campus
By Galen Hall and Galen Winsor Staff Columnist and Op-Ed Contributor Tuesday, November 19, 2019 Last month, a representative from ExxonMobil arrived on campus to recruit Brown geology students. One of us, Galen Winsor, went to listen and ask questions. As geology students, we have deep concerns about the extent to which Brown supports and receives support from companies like ExxonMobil, which is one of the main perpetrators behind the climate crisis.
Hall ’20: Is the Open Curriculum a failed experiment?
Brown University’s celebrated Open Curriculum turned 50 this year.
Academic departments must stop hiding from climate change
“You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!” This grief-stricken rebuke earned 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg a hearty round of applause at the United Nations’ Climate Action Summit on Monday.
Hall ’20: Principles of Economics should teach the nuance of human rationality
Every year, around 400 undergraduates sign up for the introductory course Econ 0110: “Principles of Economics.” Nearly four out of every five students in the current iteration of this course are first-years. For them, it may be their first serious exposure to economic policy. It might also be the last, especially judging by Critical Review, which indicates that a large number of attendees do not plan to concentrate in economics.
GLOBAL WARMING NEEDS FRONT PAGE COVERAGE
Extinction Rebellion urges the Boston Globe to declare climate emergency For society to undergo the drastic, transformational change required to save our species, respected media like the Boston Globe should lead in communicating the existential risks of climate damage. The Extinction Rebellion is an international mobilization whose first demand is that governments and media tell the truth about the climate emergency.
Hall ’20: Green New Deal is rational, not radical
When Hurricane Michael hit Florida in October, following a pattern of increasingly powerful storms, I was of course worried for my grandfather. But he and his hurricane-fortified gated community withstood the most intense storm in the past fifty years with little incident. Not so in northern Florida, where poorer towns remain flattened and the hurricane’s victims — many still without housing — fear they have been forgotten.
Divestment is the only responsible option
The university recently announced plansto aim for net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, with a 75 percent reduction below current levels by 2025. Brown’s net-zero goals are a great improvement – but by no means exceptional, given the scope of the ecological crisis facing our planet. And, while President Paxson P’19 attempts to use these goals to position Brown as a “leader” on addressing climate change, she ignores the fact that many other universities are setting (and achieving) similar goals.
Climate change deserves your attention
Brown has a well-earned reputation for social justice advocacy. It’s with good reason that Fox News host Jesse Watters perennially prowls our campus for soundbites. But among the wide array of injustices that students at Brown protest, climate change lies surprisingly low on the list. It doesn’t have to — and shouldn’t — be this way.
Playing a Flush Draw Aggressively From Out of Position
This week's hand comes from early in a tournament — an example of defending the big blind when deep-stacked with a couple of suited cards, then negotiating what to do after flopping a desired flush draw. The blinds were 25/50, and the hand started with a young player raising to 125 on the button. It folded to me in the big blind where like the raiser I had about 9,000 to start where I looked down at .
Christopher Vernon is Victorious at 888poker Live Local London
Aspers Casino in Stratford, London played host to the 888poker Live Local London festival last week, which included an £88,000 guaranteed Main Event. The £88,000 guaranteed 888poker Live Local London Main Event only cost £220 to enter, which meant it needed 440 entries in order to hit the guarantee. Not only was the guarantee met, it was blown out of the water thanks to 529 unique entrants and 258 reentries, who created a £155,825 prize pool.
Tommy Angelo Presents: Bad Beats Be Gone!
Ed. note: The following is a story involving characters from Tommy Angelo's new book Painless Poker — a conversation involving three of them (plus the author). "Be advised," explains Angelo, "that in the chronology of the Painless Poker universe, this story comes after the book." Alfonzo Calibri threw an aggressive question at Charlie. "What, precisely, is a bad beat?" Charlie replied in his usual non-combative tone.
Casino Poker for Beginners: Lammers, Rebuy Buttons, Add-Ons and More
Ed. note: For those who might have missed it before, we're reprising Robert Woolley's series of articles for poker players who are new to live poker. The series is great for newcomers, and likely useful as well to those with experience playing in casinos and poker rooms. In this mini-series, I've been discussing all of the different kinds of buttons that you might encounter at casino poker tables. We're nearing the end — just these last five to explain.
Casino Poker for Beginners: Missed Blinds, Seat Change & Other Buttons
Ed. note: For those who might have missed it before, we're reprising Robert Woolley's series of articles for poker players who are new to live poker. The series is great for newcomers, and likely useful as well to those with experience playing in casinos and poker rooms. In my last article, I tried to lay out everything players new to live poker might ever want to know about the dealer button.
Global Poker Index: Bryn Kenney Still King of Both POY and Overall Rankings

For a look at the entire list, visit the official GPI website. Here's a look at the rankings as of October 4. Things have remained stable at the top of the 2017 Global Poker Index Player of the Year rankings over recent weeks, with Bryn Kenney remaining the top-ranked player of the year again after the last update.
Pixel Poker: Dealer-Free Electronic Tables Could Be a Game Changer
Putting the fun back in poker is a regular refrain within the poker community at the moment. From YouTube to Twitter to televised cash games like "Poker Night in America," mixing in a little entertainment and happiness as the cards are dealt has become a goal for many.
The Muck: Daniel Negreanu's Massive Side Bets at the Poker Masters
It might be a relatively slow week according to the poker calendar, but it has been anything but slow on Twitter. With side action at $1 million dollars and counting for the upcoming Poker Masters, plus an epic slow roll in California, there was plenty to sink our teeth into for the latest edition of The Muck. While The Masters has the iconic green jacket in golf, PokerGO is betting on purple. And so is Daniel Negreanu.
Bet-Sizing When Targeting Second-Best Hands
When you get raised on the river, it is always worth considering whether you can put in a reraise with your value hands, even if they aren't strictly the nuts. The following hand presents such a case. Of course if you do decide to reraise, the question then becomes one of size. In that regard, your opponent's capacities to fold strong-looking hands will be the most important factor. Early in a $1,000 live tournament I limped along at 50-100 with the potent . Stacks were all around 24,000.
Throwback Thursday: Doug Polk Versus Dan Cates
During the winner ceremony of the PokerStars Championship Barcelona, winner Sebastian Sorensson let Doug Polk know that he if wanted to play some heads-up, Sorensson would be happy to oblige. You can find more on that here. Naturally, this led to some reflections on other high stakes battles that Polk has been involved in. For this week's Throwback Thursday we look back at what happened when "frienemies" Doug Polk and Daniel Cates are seated at the same table for the 2014 Big One for One Drop.
New Poker Game 'Flopomania' to Launch on 888poker on Sunday, August 20
Two weeks ago, a new mysterious poker game was discovered in the 888poker lobby. "Flopomania" was available for real-money play for a few hours, and then vanished. 888poker claimed that the game was leaked accidentally, but many players got to test out the never-before-seen poker variant. On Friday, 888poker announced that Flopomania will officially launch in the poker room on Sunday, August 20.

The PokerNews Quiz: Terms and Conditions
Poker is a game full of its own specialized terminology, with some of the terms being better known than others. Such terms often refer to the current conditions of play, alluding to players’ actions, rules and/or etiquette, or other elements of the game. Here are eight multiple-choice questions testing your knowledge of some poker terms. Get six out eight right and you pass the quiz, and when you're done be sure to take a look at the "Top results" to see how you finished.
Navigating Postflop With Middle Pair in a Multi-Way Pot
Here's another educational poker hand to consider this week, again coming from relatively early in the $10,000 buy-in World Poker Tour L.A. Poker Classic. In this one I am dealt under the gun. With the blinds 150/300 with a 50 ante, I raised to 800. The effective stacks are all relatively deep (I started with 50,000). I end up getting five callers all around the table, including from a great loose-aggressive player in middle position and both blinds.

Player of the Week: David Bach Wins Two WSOP Bracelets in 10 Days
David Bach won his first World Series of Poker bracelet in 2009 in grand fashion, besting arguably the toughest field in poker in the $50,000 World Championship H.O.R.S.E. event. Six years and several close calls later, Bach won his second career bracelet on June 5 in the $1,500 Dealers Choice - 6 Handed event at the 2017 WSOP. Ten days after that, he won his third in the $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship.
Rifat Palevic Wins WSOP $1,000 Super Turbo Bounty Event in 14 Hours
After only 14 hours of play, a champion was crowned in the new $1,000 Super Turbo Bounty Event at the World Series of Poker. Sweden’s Rifat Palevic outlasted 1,867 players to be crowned champion, collect his first gold bracelet, and pocket $183,903 for his efforts — and it was all done in a day. The structure saw players start with 5,000 in chips and receive $300 for each player they eliminated throughout the day.
Q&A with Kondler & Associates, CPAs: Tax Implications for Non-U.S. Citizens
If you are non-U.S. citizen or resident and have played at the World Series of Poker (or any other U.S.-based poker tournament), you are familiar with the taxation process that occurs after you win. However, if this is your first U.S.-based tournament series, there are a few things you should familiarize yourself with before making the journey this summer: Will I have any of my winnings withheld?
Cooke's Corner: Five Major Components of Poker
What does it take to reach a top level, to be one of the few who has what it takes to succeed where others fail? It takes five major components in poker: Knowledge of strategy is perhaps the simplest of the five requisite skills. You attain this two ways. The most effective way is through experience. When playing, observe what better players do. Ask yourself why they do what they do? Spend the time between hands designing counterplays which take advantage of your opponents' tendencies.
888poker Implements 'Action' Clock for 888Live Tournaments
888poker announced on Tuesday that it will be implementing an Action Clock, also known as a Shot Clock, during its upcoming 888Live Festivals, starting with the 888Live London Festival from October 4-16. The introduction of the Shot Clock is in line with 888poker's new strategy to 'take back the game' for its players, as it encourages a more fast paced and exciting game environment.
James Moore Captures Back-to-Back Titles in WSOP Super Seniors Event
After three long hours and 133 hands of heads-up play, James Moore accomplished the amazing feat of winning the World Series of Poker $1,000 Super Seniors event in back-to-back years. This year's win earned him $259,230 and a second gold WSOP bracelet after defeating Kerry Goldberg, a worthy opponent in his own right. Last year, Moore pocketed $230,626, earning himself almost half a million dollars in this event across two series.
Ask The Pros: Thoughts on the New WSOP Player of the Year Formula?
Thirteen years ago, Daniel Negreanu earned the first World Series of Poker Player of the Year award and instantly thrust the spotlight on a new accolade rewarding the most outstanding results during the series. In the early years, each event was weighted equally. There were no multipliers for the amount of buy-in or the number of players. There was also nothing but the title to acknowledge the achievement, at least in that first year.
Inside Gaming: Demolition of Fremont Landmarks Scheduled, NJ Revenue Up
This week's installment of Inside Gaming shares news regarding the scheduled demolition of a block of buildings in downtown Las Vegas including two long standing casinos (now closed), reports on a positive month of May for Atlantic City, and follows up on the story of a woman who thought she won nearly $43 million in a New York slot machine only to be rewarded with a steak dinner.
Fantasy Golf: Top DraftKings Picks for the Memorial
The Memorial is Jack Nicklaus' host tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club. It is a Par 72 course that plays around 7,390 yards. Recent trends favor a first-time winner here, as William McGirt (2016), David Lingmerth (2015) and Hideki Matsuyama (2014) stood in the winner's circle, but remember trends are made to be broken. With the strength of the field this week and how the top players are playing, it will be very difficult for a player to get his first win at Memorial.
Super High Roller Bowl Day 3: Money Bubble Reached, Schindler in Command
After a little more than 17 levels of play, the $300,000 Super High Roller Bowl at ARIA has reached the money bubble at the close of Day 3. The next player eliminated will receive nothing, and everyone after that will be guaranteed to at least double their investment. The strong showing by amateurs through the first two days of the tournament did not carry over, as it's a pro-heavy group that will make up the unofficial final table when play resumes for Day 4.
A Poker Code of Conduct: Lessons from Tennis
With the WSOP less than a month away, I have recently been thinking about last year's Main Event and how a couple of controversies tested the formal (and informal) rules of poker. There was the incident with the push/fold chart being used in the middle of a hand, and, most famously, there was the William Kassouf saga. I'm going to focus this article on the latter. Like so many other poker fans throughout the world, I intently watched the drama unfold at the 2016 WSOP Main Event.
partypoker MILLIONS: Tons of Side Events on Remaining Schedule
With more than £8 million in guarantees, the partypoker MILLIONS at Dusk Till Dawn is one of the biggest poker festivals ever held in the United Kingdom. The £10,300 High Roller, itself boasting of a £1 million guarantee, crowns its champion on April 18 and the £6 million guaranteed MILLIONS Main Event is in full swing and will award its winner at least £1 million.
Carnegie Mellon AI Beats Poker Pros Again
Carnegie Mellon artificial intelligence program, Lengpudashi, beat six Chinese players by $793,327 in virtual chips in a 36,000-hand exhibition April 10. This program is a version of Libratus, which accomplished a similar feat, one with 120,000 hands in January in Pittsburgh. Libratus beat four poker pros in a 20-day heads-up, no-limit hold’em competition. According to a release from Carnegie Mellon, the company responsible for both AI, Strategic Machine Inc., will take home the pot of $290,000.
Guy Klass Wins the 2017 WNYPC Main Event
Guy Klass, a 46-year-old heavy-duty truck salesman from Buffalo, New York, took down the 2017 Western New York Poker Challenge Main Event in Niagara Falls Monday afternoon. Klass earned $47,016 for the win, getting the best of a 267-entry field that created a $235,681 prize pool. After two starting flights at the Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino on Friday and Saturday, the event played down to a final four on Sunday.

Denis Timofeev Leads Final Six at PokerStars Championship Panama
The goal for Day 5 of the PokerStars Championship Panama was a simple one: play down from 12 players remaining to just 6. How long that would take, was up for debate amongst the people in the know. While losing 6 players might not seem like a big hurdle to take, play was rather deep. All in all, it took seven hours to make the event 6-handed.
