I write a weekly column, 'In the pit lane' for several publications.

Back in the day when F1 was run by the sport’s ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone betting was a dirty word with Ecclestone believing the gambling industry would tarnish F1’s image. How this squared with his love of tobacco money was always a mystery. When Liberty Media took control Adam Crothers, Formula 1’s head of digital media, was tasked with coming up with a strategy to make money from sports betting.

As the F1 circus moves on to Sochi for the next round Russian President Vladimir Putin will no doubt be pleased the Haas cars can circumvent the ban on drivers racing under the Russian flag with the adoption of the ‘Russian-themed’ livery. The irony of course is Haas arrived on the F1 scene with the emphasis on the team being F1’s American team! Much has been written over why Gene Haas remains in F1 with various theories doing the rounds.

Liberty Media Spoilt For Choice For New Races

10 August, 2021 | Garry Sloan As the global pandemic continues to create havoc with the 2021 F1 race schedule Liberty Media continues to look forward. Liberty has an ambition to ultimately hold 25 races per season and to facilitate this the introduction of more double and triple headers will be necessary regardless of the human cost to the teams.
