US voters hear a stark message in the presidential race: The country's fate is on the line
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Few elections in the nation’s history have provided such a divide as this year’s, with the two major candidates and so many of their supporters saying the outcome will determine the fate of the country and whether it can hold to its democratic moorings. As they cast their ballots, voters have opinions on the divide as diverse and complex as the nation itself. Perhaps no place captures this range of perspective more clearly than Charlottesville, Virginia.
Tennessee becomes new front in battle for American democracy
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee has become a new front in the battle for the future of American democracy after Republicans expelled two Black lawmakers from the state Legislature for their part in a protest urging passage of gun-control measures. Examples abound of Black residents, primarily young men, targeted by police.

DETROIT — (AP) — About 50 years ago, Greg Bowens was given “the talk” — sage advice about what young Black people should do and, more importantly, not do when stopped by police in Detroit. But just this month, Tyre Nichols, a Black man, died after police officers in Memphis, Tennessee, stopped, threatened and brutally beat him, even as he seemed to follow the same advice Bowens heard in the 1970s.

By COREY WILLIAMS and GARY FIELDS Associated Press DETROIT (AP) — “The talk” has been passed down in many Black families for generations to prepare their children for interactions with police. It is part of historical distrust of law enforcement, which is often seen as being more heavy-handed and violent in dealings with Black people or in Black neighborhoods.
