A HUNGARIAN COURT on Wednesday sentenced an Irishman to 14 years in prison for brutally killing an American tourist during sex before dumping her body in the woods. The Budapest-Capital Regional Court found the man guilty of the murder of Mackenzie Elizabeth Michalski, a 31-year-old nurse from Oregon who was on holiday in the central European country. The defendant, identified only by his initials L. T. M., had invited the victim to his apartment for sex after meeting her in a Budapest nightclub.
Kevin Bakhurst says RTÉ will need more government support as he defends spending
RTÉ IS “NOT in the business of being cheap as chips”, the broadcaster’s director-general said, as he admitted some outsourced productions have increased in price. Kevin Bakhurst also indicated that RTÉ’s commercial revenue and licence fee receipts would fall roughly €60- €65 million short of its operating costs in 2028, after a government support package runs out.

Gary Gannon Dublin city centre is out of control this week, we cannot accept this as normal
It’s a walk I’ve made countless times over the years. First as a councillor, now as a TD for Dublin Central. Down through College Green, onto Westmoreland Street, across O’Connell Bridge and up O’Connell Street. I know every part of that walk. Yesterday, though, it felt different. Not because I saw anything entirely new. It was because none of it surprised me any more. On Westmoreland Street, before I’d even reached the bridge, a young garda was talking to a woman sitting in a doorway.
Gary Gannon This government is out of touch, out of answers and out of time
YESTERDAY, AFTER A week of sustained fuel protests brought the country to its knees, the Dáil sat for the first time in 20 days. What was the government’s overriding priority? Ripping up the Dáil schedule to remove any opportunity for the Opposition to question them on their shambolic handling of both the protests and the cost-of-living crisis that led to them.
Gary Gannon: Dublin doesn’t need curfews
THIS WEEK, DUBLIN TOWN called for curfews and exclusion zones in the city centre. Last week, the Government backed calls for curfews on young people, fines for parents, and even a mini criminal assets bureau to confiscate PlayStations. When I raised the wider issue of violence in the city centre with Jim O’Callaghan in the Dáil this week, his reply was that we should all try to “get more positive” about Dublin.
Fear is what drives immigration protests in neglected communities, not hatred
THE FIRST TIME I spoke out during protests like these, I got it wrong. It was November 2022. A new emergency accommodation centre had opened in East Wall, and protests followed. I posted a long response online: trying to defend my values, push back against the far right, and bring calm. I meant every word. But I still got it wrong. By the time most people got to the end of that post, the message was lost. It felt like a lecture. I sounded like I was talking at people I’ve known my whole life.
'Grafton and Dawson Streets don't need regeneration, they're already gleaming'
THIS WEEK, DUBLIN City Council announced it would spend €6 million regenerating the laneways between Grafton Street and Dawson Street, one of the most polished corners of our capital city. This part of town is already gleaming. There’s nothing broken there, but once again, public money is flowing to places that already have everything, while parts of Dublin that have been screaming out for the basic things like bins, benches and public toilets are left waiting. It’s not a once-off.
Save the Number 11 Bus
For many of us, the Number 11 bus route is more than just a mode of transportation; it's an essential service that supports countless students, families, and elderly residents who depend on it every day. The proposed cuts to this route threaten to undermine this vital service. This route offers dependable transportation for students commuting from the Northside to UCD and enables our elderly community members to easily reach the southside.
GANNON: Shopping local strengthens our community
In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in consumer behavior, with a growing emphasis on shopping local. While many might see it as just another trend driven by social media influencers or community campaigns, the benefits of supporting local businesses extend far beyond the surface. Shopping local isn’t merely a feel-good activity; it’s a vital practice that can enrich our local community, boost our economies, and enhance our quality of life.

Poll: Is 8 December the start of Christmas? THE EIGHTH OF December is an important day in the run-up to the festive season. For many, it signifies the beginning of the Christmas period and the decorations should only be put up today or after today. For others, the Christmas period began weeks ago and decorations are already up. It’s also a day when hordes of shoppers from outside Dublin flock to either the capital or their nearest large town/city to pick up bits for Christmas.

Poll: Should career breaks for teachers be suspended in response to staff shortages? IT WAS REPORTED yesterday that the Government is considering suspending career breaks for teachers in response to a shortage of staff in schools around the country.
Gary Gannon: Government must act immediately to address teacher shortages
THE TEACHER RECRUITMENT crisis in our primary and second-level schools did not happen overnight – it has been more than a decade in the making and is the result of flawed policy decisions by successive governments. Even before the pandemic and cost-of-living squeeze that followed, the seeds were already sown for the serious staff shortages we are now seeing in schools. The introduction of a lower salary scale for new entrants to the profession in 2010 marked the start of the decline.

THIS MONTH MARKS three years since the launch of Eircode, a 7-digit postcode system for identifying the location of every house and business in Ireland. Each Eircode is unique, which is helpful for emergency services, people making deliveries, and those simply looking to find the right address. However, while many find the system useful, others have criticised the €38 million cost and say the assignment of codes makes no logical sense.

Opinion: 'I’ve never been whistled at while walking along a Dublin street'
“IMAGINE LIVING IN a city where you didn’t have to send a text to confirm that you’ve arrived home safely. The Social Democrats held a number of public meetings on the topic of the UN Safe Cities for Women and Young Girls initiative last week. While planning these meetings, the above sentence was posted to one of our branch group-chats by a member who now works abroad but wished to contribute to an initiative she felt was hugely important to the city she still calls home.
