Dr. Gary Slutkin argues that violence isn't just a metaphor for a health crisis. As he argues in his book, The End of Violence, it’s actually a contagious disease that can replicate through neural pathways and social interactions. “It’s a disease by its definition ... an entity [that] causes or can cause disability and death—what we call in health morbidity and mortality,” he told Sam Osterhout. And like many diseases, violence can be contagious, Slutkin added.

The public health approach to treating Chicago’s violence works

Shooting and killings in Chicago are increasing sharply this year, up more than 30 percent so far. There is a national trend of increasing violence in cities across the United States, but this does not make the violence any more acceptable. Chicago has long been known as a violent city, but there is no getting used to any amount of violence. Furthermore, it was not long ago that Chicago was on a much different path—toward becoming a much safer big city and an example of what can be done.
