Going Back to Engineering School (in My 50’s!)
So I find myself back in school in my fifties, studying systems engineering, and every day feels like both a Herculean test and a gift. In 2024, I got the opportunity to meet young students from GMU, GW, and Virginia Tech. They ran our affiliated Student Divisions (or student chapters) at their respective schools. To see a young person on-the-move with purpose and unlimited potential is awe inspiring.

LOVE WILL WIN
It's easy to hate your sickness now, As it ravages your body still, But you're still the girl I grew to love, Now the woman I always will. Neither of us know where this will end, What lies on down this road, But I'll be here, yes, all the way, To share your heavy load. Your features are changing every day, Not the woman I first did see, But no matter how much you change, You're the most beautiful woman to me.

Anyway Love
Note: Names have been changed. On Valentine’s Day, Meg* went all out, giving her husband, Peter,* his favorite candy and tickets to a hockey game. Later that night, she wrapped herself in a special outfit purchased just for the occasion. Peter got her a card. At the grocery store. That he purchased on the way home from work. He didn’t add anything to it, either. He just signed it, “Peter.” A couple of days later, Meg tried to explain that she felt a little taken for granted.

Soul Mates: What Does the Bible Say About Discovering Love?
Estimated reading time: 6 minutes “I think I have found my “soulmate!” You might have said this or wondered about the possibility of a soul mate, especially as you binge-watch romantic movies and hear characters like Jerry Maguire say epic lines like, “You complete me!” In today’s world, the concept of a “soul mate” is deeply ingrained in our culture, fueled by romantic literature, movies, and our own desires for a perfect match. But did you know the term “soul mate” is not found in the Bible?
"A System of Environmental Analysis and User-Input Studies for Medical " by Gary Thomas Nash
Abstract The thesis first presents the concept of environmental analysis and user-input studies as it relates to architecture. Issues and problems that evolve from the concept are discussed. There is a need within the architectural profession to establish a system of analysis that will allow the architect to understand how people behave in and react to specific buildings or spaces he or someone else has designed.
So, You’re Planning A Wedding …
It’s wedding season, a joyful and exciting time often accompanied by overwhelming pressure. In the midst of finding the right location, saying yes to the dress, creating an invite list and dealing with family expectations, couples can forget the reasons they are getting married in the first place. Some couples even find themselves making a pact to just get through the wedding planning so they can enjoy life together afterward. But what about that life after the ceremony?

A Red Hot Cold War Thriller
I confess to being a nut for spy novels— real ones, not “thrillers” stuffed with shootouts. (There is little gunplay in real-life espionage operations, except special ops—but that’s playing in a different ballpark.) I gobble them like some chocoholic in Willy Wonka’s factory. But I find too many of today’s offerings to be bland confections. Too many Hersheys, too few Godivas. I am a traditionalist of the genre, preferring books with Cold War backdrops.
Use Your Time Wisely When You Become Empty Nesters
Estimated reading time: 7 minutes Now that your kids have left the house, what do you do? All of your busy routines have been extracted from your schedule which may leave you feeling like you’re left with a whole lot of nothing. But you can use the time wisely when you become empty nesters. This is your opportunity to reconnect with your spouse.
The Church Triumphant
Hey church, we’ve got a lot of dirty laundry, and it’s showing. I don’t deny that—the evidence is too obvious. But this post is suggesting there’s another story to tell, without denying the first. I tend to be a bit protective of Christ’s bride, even as I marvel at how Christ hasn’t washed his hands of us. But perhaps we can take a cue from him on this one and spur one another on by sharing good news about the church, and not letting the dirty laundry steal the headlines.

Composer Praises Shen Yun’s Music and Musicians
SALT LAKE CITY—The beauty in music is the magic of all the instruments working in harmony to create luscious music, and who can understand this better than a composer? Gary Thomas, a musician and composer, with his family, Kirsten and Hope, came to experience Shen Yun Performing Arts at the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater on the evening of Feb. 23. “I really like the textures.

Sacred Marriage: The Foundation of Fellowship — Think Eternity with Matt Brown
By Gary Thomas An actress who once had one of the most popular shows on cable television wrote a sex manual with her husband, praising him as an “artist” and liberally sharing the delight the two of them experienced in the bed. Barely a year after the book came out, the actress announced that she and her husband had separated. Later, the two divorced. Couples won’t save their marriages by becoming athletes in bed. They won’t stave of divorce by increasing their income.
Making Your Marriage a Fortress Original
“Your daughter has cancer. It looks like osteo sarcoma.” “What does that mean?” “It means we’re probably going to have to amputate her leg to save her life.” This diagnosis came in 2017. It’s one of every parent’s worst nightmares. But more than a child’s health was at stake. Doug and Rochelle’s marriage was vulnerable. They are convinced that if the diagnosis had come just a couple of years earlier, they’d be divorced right now.
A Message From Laurie
A Message from Laurie: Dear Friends of Gary: It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that our colleague and friend Gary Thomas passed away unexpectedly and peacefully while on vacation in Italy with his life partner Bob and Bob’s nephew. Here’s how Gary described himself in his blog: “Gary is a Colorado native who moved to Key West in 1993 to own and operate Eaton Lodge Guesthouse. Prior to moving to Key West, Gary was an attorney in a Denver law firm.
The Amazing Power of Thanking God for What He HASN'T Done
ShareTweetPinPocketFlipboard The last time Lisa and I bought a house we made a naïve mistake that we won’t make again: we closed on the house with the builder promising to finish several items that weren’t yet completed. He was a Christian, after all, and had even written scriptures into the frame of the house before finishing it. But he never did finish it, and his ability to stall exceeded our patience until we finally paid to have the rest of the work done ourselves.
Dressing for Success
It's the day before Easter and my mind takes me back more than half a century to Christmas 1957. I was ten years old. (That's not me in the photo, but that is what I looked like. Poor kid. There is another one out there.) I started this piece several times and erased everything. I will go for the punchline instead. My mother made me wear my Christmas outfit to go to downtown Denver to watch Old Yeller which was playing at the Paramount Theater of 16th Street.

A Book Review of Married Sex By Gary Thomas and Debra Fileta
Married Sex opens with a story of a naked 60-year-old couple pretending to be Adam and Eve and having sex in their backyard. There’s nothing particularly wrong with a 60-year-old couple having sex naked outside, but this odd opening sets the stage for a very odd book. I couldn’t help asking, “Do they live in a subdivision? How high is the fence? Are there mosquitoes?
10 Things God Asks of a Biblical Husband
My love for Scripture is matched only by my love for Jesus, and the love of one is the expression of my love for the other. Everything I aspire to be as a husband is because of what the Bible calls me to be. And since Jesus was never married, I have to take the bulk of my instruction as a biblical husband from the other words of Scripture, which I take to be as authoritative as the “red letters” of Jesus.
The Arduous Journey of Being Married and Unequally Yoked
Single women, take note: Every married Christian woman I’ve ever met who married a non-believing man has said, emphatically, they would tell every other woman not to do it. They wouldn’t wish away the children they’ve had, but as a general rule, I’ve yet to find a woman who thinks it’s worth the risk of being unequally yoked going in. Living Unequally Yoked Catherine found that out the hard way, and spent over two decades gradually wooing and praying her husband into the kingdom.
What God Asks of a Biblical Husband
WOW! This message by Gary Thomas stopped me in my tracks……..it made me think! It stopped me in my tracks. It made me realize I need to do some things much better as a husband to my angel Sharon. I went to prayer right away for God to continue to show me how to be a better husband. Ever since I spoke at the ‘Soldiers of the Cross’ conference I have sought to be a better man of God. Every time I prepare a sermon and then deliver it, it has a profound effect on me to be a better man of God.
Celebrating the Good Husband: How to Spot One, How to Keep One
I want to celebrate the good husband. Lisa and I were at a women’s conference when Lisa asked the wife sitting next to her how she had slept the night before. “Terrible,” she replied. “I’m used to my husband’s backrub every night and it’s hard to get to sleep without it.” “Every night?” Lisa asked. “Every night.” The Good Husband Plenty of these blog posts have challenged selfish husbands (and, admittedly less often, wives).
Sacred Simmering
One of the great challenges of sexual fulfillment in the twenty-first century is that there’s so little time and energy left over to enjoy sex. I get sympathetic laughs in my talks whenever I mention “hotel sex.” Two of the main reasons hotel sex (or vacation sex) creates such a different experience are time and energy. Most of us who are older than thirty will find that our sexual desires aren’t like a light switch. We can’t just flip them on, even if we really want to.
It's Not the Right Partner for Marriage if Your Finacé Doesn't Have This Quality
One of the most important qualities in the right partner for marriage (and a successful life) is something I never even considered when I was single. I’m not talking about faith in God—I certainly considered that. Physical attraction mattered a lot to me, and I’m not saying that physical appearance doesn’t matter at all. But there’s another quality that wasn’t even on my radar. Since Lisa excels at it, I’ve probably taken it for granted because I had “it” when I chose her.
Can I Find Freedom From Toxic People? [Episode 75 With Gary Thomas]
Have you ever felt the guilt and responsibility of meeting the needs of unhealthy people? I sure have! Oh, girl, we try to make them happy, but when we try, we end up frustrated and poisoned by their toxic behavior. It’s exhausting and discouraging. But it’s also a hard dilemma, isn’t it? Because we follow Jesus, it can be tricky to know when it’s okay to walk away from someone. Sometimes, walking in the footsteps of Jesus means learning when to walk away from toxic people.

Married with Kids? Two Dynamics to Watch Out For
What do you do in marriage when the rival for your spouse’s love and affection is one of your own children? In fact, one of the biggest tests of a marriage occurs when kids start arriving. Raising kids can draw a couple together like nothing else or it can rip the two of you apart with fury. Here are two dynamics to watch out for. “It’s an evolutionary thing” One writer admitted, “The arrival of my son had completely altered my relationship with my husband.
Marriage and Family Alliance: Nancy George was a great mother
If you ever met Nancy George you had a friend for life. Nancy was one of the most well-known mothers in Lawrence County. She had three wonderful children of her own — Steven, William and Suzanne. She had six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She always told me how much she loved them and how good they were to her. As I reflect on her life as her pastor for nearly 15 years, I believe she is a great example of why we love our mothers so much.

Why are some Christians so mean?
This message from Gary is titled “Why are Christians mean.” I took the liberty to change the title here at FGGAM because I do not think the majority of Christians are mean. This post was in my ChurchLeaders email today. I soaked it in….I realized there are times I may come across mean. It is a good heart check up for us all. I am thankful for Gary’s message as it can help us all be better people of God. As I love to say, we are all to be Ambassadors for Jesus.

Can I Embrace My Unique Spiritual Temperament? With Gary Thomas [Part 2][Episode 106]
Did you get to hear last week’s episode of the 4:13 Podcast? I sure hope so! It was the first part of a two-part conversation with author Gary Thomas that continues right now! And, friend, it’s so good! God may have wired us differently, but He created us to need each other. Let’s support and learn from each other. [Click to Tweet] If you’ve already heard Part 1 or read the show notes for it, then you know that you have what Gary calls a spiritual temperament or sacred pathway.
The Most Lovely of All Virtues
The Most Lovely of All Virtues (If you’ve ever lost a child to miscarriage, please be careful about reading further—this could be triggering and traumatic.) “A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out” (Isaiah 42:3) It was one of those afternoons that changed the way I think of others every time I’m in a public place… Brent and Vicky (not their real names) were dear friends of ours decades ago, a young couple working part-time for our church as Brent went to...
Walking Away From a Child
Walking Away From a Child Brandon has two daughters and a son, all grown. His son lives a destructive life, which hurts Brandon deeply. He admits that wanting his son to succeed may be a bit of “male pride,” and he has exhausted himself trying to force his son into making better choices. His counselor has worked with Brandon for years and understands the overall family dynamics.
Can I Embrace My Unique Spiritual Temperament? With Gary Thomas [Part 1][Episode 105]
Did you know that you have what author Gary Thomas calls a spiritual temperament? It’s true! We aren’t all naturally drawn to know and worship God in the same way—and that’s okay. [Click to Tweet] A spiritual temperament or sacred pathway describes the way that you best relate to God. You see, while we all share the common purpose to love and to know God, each of us is uniquely wired in the way we relate to Him. We aren’t all naturally drawn to know and worship Him in the same way.
Ask Yourself These Two Questions About Character Before You Agree to Get Married
Determining someone’s character can be a bit tricky if your brain is a little fogged by infatuation, so I’ve come up with a question that helps singles look at their potential mate with a little more clarity: “After watching this person interact with others, would you like to become more like them?
