Florida Supreme Court raises bar for whistleblower claims
But employers should not lower their standards. The Florida Supreme Court recently resolved a long-standing conflict concerning the Florida Private Sector Whistleblower Act. In Gessner v. Southern Company, the Court adopted a standard that is likely to make it more difficult for employees to prevail on certain whistleblower retaliation claims.
When Termination Becomes a Litigation Risk: Using severance strategically
Employers often assume that a legally defensible termination decision will not create a litigation risk. But that is not always the case. Even well-supported employment decisions can lead to expensive disputes with unpredictable outcomes, and those disputes can be a huge distraction for managers and co-workers. That is where severance comes in.

Housing issues affect Arkansas children
For every one of us, a home is much more than a house with four walls and a roof. Within these walls we eat and sleep, learn, form and maintain relationships with family and neighbors, and develop habits and personalities. It is where people can relax and escape from the world. It is where civic life begins as connections are formed with neighbors to create a cohesive community. These activities comprise essential tasks of childhood that have serious implications for kids' later health.

Merger not a threat to family, small farms
Last week, the European Commission gave its conditional approval for Bayer’s intended acquisition of Monsanto. While the deal that stands to make St. Louis the North American home of Bayer is far from closed, conditional approval represents an important step for this incredibly complex business venture and another opportunity for the companies to demonstrate their commitment to finding a path forward. Adapting to the business environment isn’t something new in agriculture.
‘I Will Be There With You’ By Gary Wheeler -
To the Editor, and to my children and parents — past and present: For the first time since 1972, I will not be operating that big, yellow “taxi” to transport you to school on your first day. Words can not express the feelings that are becoming more and more pronounced as each day passes.
Creativity Required To Save Fine Specimen By Peter Sepe -
Let’s be “creative,” because by doing so, we can continue to make things “Nicer in Newtown.” After reading last week’s editorial “Stumping For Trees,” I was moved to write this letter to the editor. Thank you for your tribute and the pros and cons of Eversource’ action to make our community a bit safer. Yes, safety is a very important concern while addressing progress.
