Objective This study examines perceptions of paid leave-taking itself and variations in these perceptions by parent gender, sexual orientation, and marital status. Background Previous research largely focuses on the consequences associated with leave-taking, particularly highlighting workplace penalties associated with leave-taking. There has also been limited attention to workers with diverse family forms.

1 Introduction The percentage of individuals identifying outside the gender binary has been increasing in recent years, particularly among younger generations. Around 5% of all young adults and 11% of LGBTQ adults in the U.S. now identify as nonbinary (Wilson and Meyer 2021; Brown 2022), and more recent birth cohorts have been more likely to disclose transgender identities than older birth cohorts (D. Lagos 2022).

ABSTRACT The deinstitutionalization of marriage suggests more support for divorce and the forgoing of marriage. In this study, we examine attitudes toward both marriage and divorce in the context of having children and how they coincide with each other, creating a new typology of attitudes.
