Thirty Years and 300 Million Flight Hours Later, GE Aerospace’s Carbon Fiber Composites Are Ready for the GE9X Engine
It’s remarkable how many groundbreaking innovations that debuted in 1995 are still thriving. Microsoft introduced the Windows 95 operating system, which continues to influence the latest versions of office software. Amazon’s web page was officially launched that same year to sell books online; today it’s the world’s largest retailer, selling just about everything. It also was the year GE Aerospace introduced a watershed material into a commercial jet engine.

It also carries larger risks of product maturity problems when it enters service than the airframe. We discuss why. In our journey through an engine, we have reached the turbine part, where we will dig deeper into the high-pressure turbine. This is the most stressed part of the engine and has a major influence on engine performance and durability. Figure 1.

A new sensitivity-based mapping scheme for topology optimization of graded TPMS designs - The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology
Abstract Graded TPMS topologies display excellent mechanical and thermal properties. Design schemes targeting optimal performance exist, but final reconstructed designs still suffer from performance degradation. To overcome this challenge, we propose an automated design framework based on the integration of a homogenization-based topology optimization scheme and a new mapping strategy. Optimized designs obtained using a modified SIMP technique are reconstructed as graded gyroid structures.

Engine Development. Part 3. The early turbofans.
Subscription Required By Bjorn Fehrm Introduction September 1, 2022, © Leeham News: Last week, we looked at the motivation to change from propeller engines to jet engines as higher cruising speeds were sought for airliners. We learned the straight jet engine, while good for military jets, wasn’t well suited for civil airliners. It was noisy and fuel-thirsty. It was why the subsequent engine development, the turbofan, was quickly accepted by the airlines. Figure 1.
Water-enhanced turbofan: Revolutionary propulsion concept based on a gas turbine engine
The water-enhanced turbofan, or WET engine, is a propulsion concept that takes full advantage of MTU’s know-how. Utilizing residual heat from its exhaust gas, the WET engine uses a steam generator to vaporize water, which is then injected into the combustor. The water for this is extracted from the exhaust gas by means of a condenser and then separated. What are the advantages of the WET engine?
3 Ways Thermoplastic Composites Improve Aerospace Sustainability
Building a sustainable future is undoubtedly growing in importance as airlines face greater scrutiny to reduce their carbon footprint. Rising fuel costs and supply chain delays have prompted industrial engineers at Collins Aerospace to introduce new and redesigned products to reduce energy usage, decrease aircraft weight, accelerate production and improve overall aircraft quality.

Why the time for open fan is now
The a-ha moment came around 2014. At the time I was leading GE’s advanced technology team, a group of technical engineers whose sole role is to test the boundaries of what’s possible. We were probing the possibilities of improving fuel efficiency with the goal to see how far we could push. GE had designed and tested open fan designs dating back to the 1980s and we had advanced significantly on that work, but a counter-rotating fan was essentially a given to us at that point.
