Abstract Wheat is the most widely cultivated crop in the world, with over 215 million hectares grown annually. The 10+ Wheat Genomes Project recently sequenced and assembled to chromosome-level the genomes of nine wheat cultivars, uncovering genetic diversity and selection within the pan-genome of wheat. Here, we provide a wheat pan-transcriptome with de novo annotation and differential expression analysis for these wheat cultivars across multiple tissues.

Editor's evaluation This important study addresses the question of how pathogen reservoirs can play a role in the emergence of new virulences, using beets and Uromyces beticola as a pathosystem. The authors find convincing evidence for higher signals of diversity and differentiation in effector genes and significant differences in reproductive rates between two pathogen populations that occur either on wild or on wild and domesticated beets.

Abstract Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) is a vital staple crop, with an urgent need for increased production to help feed the world’s growing population. Aegilops mutica (2n = 2x = 14; T genome) is a diploid wild relative of wheat carrying valuable agronomic traits resulting in its extensive exploitation for wheat improvement. This paper reports a chromosome-scale, haplotype-resolved genome assembly of Ae. mutica using HiFi reads and Omni-C data.
