Gerald "Gerry" Flynn is a British freelance journalist who has been based in Southeast Asia since 2017 and in the years that have passed he has extensively covered developments in Cambodia and the region.

The intensifying climate crisis led him to focus his work on the interlinked environmental and social issues associated with development. Unfortunately, his reporting on environmental crime led the Cambodian government to permanently ban Flynn in 2025.

He currently resides in Bangkok, Thailan…

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

William Boot from Evelyn Waugh's novel Scoop. His blundering is all too relatable.

Why did you become a journalist?

What can I say, I'm a sucker for lost causes

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The Great Koh Kong Land Rush for Mongabay - I don't want to trumpet it too much, but I'm pleased with how it turned out.

Our documentary with Al Jazeera 101 East picked up a silver at the Telly Awards 2022 for sustainability after we looked into the rising tide of medical waste mounting up across Southeast Asia, specifically in Indonesia and in Cambodia where I served as producer.
