News editor at The News Record, the University of Cincinnati's independent student newspaper.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. I'm glad I'm too young to have experienced it in the work place.
How is social media changing news?
For one, it's diminishing the value of breaking news and emphasizing good research, analysis and context.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Frank Herbert. Dune is still my favorite book series of all time.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Knowing how to turn complex issues into understandable terms and reporting the truth with context, not just printing quotes without facts.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Gmail, Google Drive, Facebook, Twitter, Muck Rack, other forms of social media. Anything that can link me to a story.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter. It's a great avenue for breaking news and finding sources.
Why did you become a journalist?
I'm curious about current events and love writing. It was the perfect match.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
"From the Inside," my private prison story. Getting prisoners' letters and verifying them with records requests felt like pure journalism.
