Revisiting a Halloween night of terror
By Gerry Moran Some things you never forget – like the Halloween night I spent in jail. In a penitentiary to be precise. Little did I know when boarding a flight for New York that I, my wife and two daughters, would end up in the penitentiary in Philadelphia! Not bad enough that my wife had some of her cosmetics confiscated (potential bomb materials, you understand) but we end up behind bars into the bargain.
Silly love songs, 50 years on and forever!
By Gerry Moran It’s music, music all the way this week but not just any old music although the music is old, 50 years old to be precise and yet it all sounds fresh to me, as if they were hits from yesterday – not from 1976. A tribute to the quality of the songs. Here are some of those hits from 1976. *Silly Love Songs, Paul McCartney’s Wings. This song topped the US charts for five weeks, longer than any other single in ’76.
Some touching words on The Long Goodbye
By Gerry Moran Forgive me if I tend to go on a bit about dementia. There are two reasons for this. One, my older brother John suffered with it for several years before passing away in 2025:Two, I’m understandably concerned that it may be genetic or hereditary, although anything I’ve read to date suggests that it’s not and I thank God for that.
Close encounters with ‘man’s best friend’
By Gerry Moran I love looking at dogs looking out car windows. Lowered car windows. They look so happy, so delighted to be looking out at the world go by with the wind in their hair and a plethora of odours wafting past their ultra-sensitive nostrils – new mown hay, silage, diesel fumes, whatever. And then I get to wondering – what are these mutts thinking about as the world passes them by, or as they pass the world by, whichever, at maybe 10 or 20 miles an hour or so.
Janet… and The Only Way Out Is In
By Gerry Moran Saturday, October 10 is World Mental Health Day, a day intended to raise global awareness, end mental health stigma and advocate for better mental health support systems. Just three days before World Mental Health Day, Janet E Sahafi will launch her new novel which is based around this very subject – mental health struggles and how we cope and love as we make our way through it in today’s world.
Stress management and a dead cow!
By Gerry Moran Stress is a killer. We all know that. Folks who smoke 20 fags a day know full well that stress is the real killer, not nicotine. Men who drink six pints of porter every night know bloody well that stress is the killer, not alcohol. But seriously, we daren’t ignore nicotine and alcohol, two other major causes of premature deaths.
Bar extensions, baptism and beer
By Gerry Moran A funny thing happened during our Arts Festival gone by. Actually I don’t know if funny is the correct word but read on and you can decide for yourself. I am coming from a festival event, it’s maybe 11.20 pm and I’m thinking I might fancy a drink. It’s late in the night and what with closing time being 11.30 pm, more or less, I’m wondering if it’s worth my while popping in for a pint.
The Left House: captivating, compassionate story
By Gerry Moran A few weeks back I came upon Shay Kirwan. Shay is a young man from inner-city Dublin; his mother died young and his father is a bitter, aggressive, alcoholic with whom he has issues. Shay has just been released from prison where he was incarcerated for his part in a botched burglary that involved fire arms. Because of his relationship, or lack of a relationship, with his violent father, Shay, with no one to help or guide him, is more or less homeless.
Haircuts, young men and the Old Spice …
By Gerry Moran Two things I hate. (Only two, Ger? Okay maybe three, now moving rapidly on). Two things I hate: I’m searching for a space in a busy parking lot, I spy one just up ahead but as I’m approaching someone cheekily shoots in before me. Hate that. I curse and swear and call the driver every name under the Sun. Names that would make my dear departed mother turn in her grave, names that I probably picked up from my father (sorry, Da).
It’s a hoofler and a right lasher…!
By Gerry Moran I found myself in Cork last week. FOUND myself in Cork! You’d swear I was lost. Actually, I did get lost which I’ll get to later. Getting to Cork is not a problem, getting around the city is the problem. We’re looking for the Wilton Shopping Centre. We’re heading there not to shop but, because it’s near our destination, and offers three hours free parking – a rarity in any city. Three hours parking in Dublin could cost you an arm and a leg. Or at least an ankle! My wife is driving.

It’s All Social Media Fun and Games Until You Get a Call from HR
It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye. Or, in reality, a client, an analyst’s support, or your credibility from getting your social media account hacked. And then, HR calls you about your social media governance. Many brands govern their social media program with documented strategy and policy. And, there are many more brands who don’t govern at all. Transparent Marketing is Risky Business
While wearing see-through clothing is sometimes risqué, doing see-through marketing is always risky.
