In 2003, he transitioned into political communications, working as a spokesman and strategist for Jerry Brown, Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris. In 2018, he returned to journalism as California opinion editor of The Sacramento Bee, writing columns and editorials on local, state and national issues.
