Abstract Introduction: Aging is associated with an increased risk of morbidity, multimorbidity and mortality in cats. However, longitudinal cohort studies are somewhat limited in this species. Information about the prevalence and incidence of age-related disease, combinations of morbidities, and factors associated with mortality could provide insights into the impact of aging on the welfare of domestic cats.

1 INTRODUCTION Domesticated nonhuman animals (hereafter, animals) are reliant on humans to meet their welfare needs. Pain has been described as a multidimensional sensory and emotional experience, and alongside other factors can greatly affect an animal's welfare state.1 Early recognition and treatment of pain, as well as the management of its cause, are important for pain control.
