Wildfires in the Spokane, Washington area have already burned through more than 8,000 acres, destroyed 700 structures, and forced about 65,000 people to evacuate their homes. Firefighters from eastern Washington and around the country have been responding to contain the fires since they began on Saturday. According to a federal incident management team coordinating the response, the fires are currently 0% contained.

Switzerland has turned its train tracks into solar power plants

The space between railroad tracks doesn’t usually do much of anything. But in a tiny village in Switzerland, Swiss inventors have spent the last year proving it can be used to generate clean electricity. In April 2025, Swiss startup Sun-Ways installed 48 solar panels along a 330-foot stretch of active railway in Buttes, Switzerland. It is the first removable solar power plant on a working rail line anywhere in the world.

Kelsey Pfendler becomes fastest person of any gender to row solo from California to Hawaii

Kelsey Pfendler began the more than 2,400-mile journey from Monterey, California, to Honolulu, Hawaii on May 21. Pfendler was on a mission to become the first American woman to row solo from California to Hawaii — and the youngest and fastest woman ever to do it. She succeeded in just 43 days, shattering the previous women’s record — but also broke the men’s record of 52 days by more than a week.
