Pan-disease blood protein profiles of rheumatic autoimmune diseases
|
Abstract Systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARDs) are a heterogeneous group of autoimmune conditions characterized by immune system dysregulation leading to chronic inflammation and tissue damage. The overlapping clinical manifestations make differential diagnosis challenging, highlighting the need for novel biomarkers to facilitate early diagnosis, stratification, and personalized treatment.

Association between subclinical coronary artery atherosclerosis and oral health—a study on a Swedish population - BDJ Open
Abstract Oral health has been linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD), but its relationship to subclinical coronary artery atherosclerosis (SCAA) remains unclear. Using coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA), we explored this association in an asymptomatic population. A total of 410 non-smokers (193 women, mean age: 64.6 years), comprising 204 individuals with SCAA and 206 without (non-SCAA), were assessed through clinical and radiographic oral evaluations.

Multi-omic definition of metabolic obesity through adipose tissue–microbiome interactions - Nature Medicine
Abstract Obesity’s metabolic heterogeneity is not fully captured by body mass index (BMI). Here we show that deep multi-omics phenotyping of 1,408 individuals defines a metabolome-informed obesity metric (metBMI) that captures adipose tissue-related dysfunction across organ systems. In an external cohort (n = 466), metBMI explained 52% of BMI variance and more accurately reflected adiposity than other omics models.

Imidazole propionate is a driver and therapeutic target in atherosclerosis - Nature
Abstract Atherosclerosis is the main underlying cause of cardiovascular diseases. Its prevention is based on the detection and treatment of traditional cardiovascular risk factors1. However, individuals at risk for early vascular disease often remain unidentified2. Recent research has identified new molecules in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis3, highlighting the need for alternative disease biomarkers and therapeutic targets to improve early diagnosis and therapy efficacy.
The association between the gut microbiome and 24-h blood pressure measurements in the SCAPIS study - Communications Medicine
Abstract There is mounting evidence supporting the role of the microbiota in hypertension from experimental studies and population-based studies. We aimed to investigate the relationship between specific characteristics of the gut microbiome and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure measurements.
Microbiome–metabolome dynamics associated with impaired glucose control and responses to lifestyle changes - Nature Medicine
Abstract Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a complex disease shaped by genetic and environmental factors, including the gut microbiome. Recent research revealed pathophysiological heterogeneity and distinct subgroups in both T2D and prediabetes, prompting exploration of personalized risk factors. Using metabolomics in two Swedish cohorts (n = 1,167), we identified over 500 blood metabolites associated with impaired glucose control, with approximately one-third linked to an altered gut microbiome.
A genome-wide association study of imaging-defined atherosclerosis - Nature Communications
Abstract Imaging-defined atherosclerosis represents an intermediate phenotype of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on directly measured coronary plaques using coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) are scarce. In the so far largest population-based cohort with CCTA data, we performed a GWAS on coronary plaque burden as determined by the segment involvement score (SIS) in 24,811 European individuals.

Fitness-related physical activity intensity explains most of the association between accelerometer data and cardiometabolic health in persons 50-64 years old | British Journal of Sports Medicine
Discussion The main result of this study is that 82% of the association between PA and CS was mediated through CRF. There were clear associations between PA and CS, PA and CRF and CRF and CS, when not controlling for the other. When including both PA and CRF as independent variables, CRF clearly dominated the association with CS, although there was a weak significant direct association between PA and CS remaining.
Underlying contributing conditions to breathlessness among middle-aged individuals in the general population: a cross-sectional study
Discussion The main underlying contributing condition among middle-aged individuals reporting breathlessness were respiratory disease (57%) followed by anxiety or depression (51%), obesity (43%) and heart disease or chest pain (35%). Overlap was common with 66% having two or more concurrent contributing conditions. Obesity was associated with reported breathlessness even after adjusting for aerobic fitness level. The present study adds to the previous knowledge in several ways.
Production of deoxycholic acid by low-abundant microbial species is associated with impaired glucose metabolism - Nature Communications
Abstract Alterations in gut microbiota composition are suggested to contribute to cardiometabolic diseases, in part by producing bioactive molecules. Some of the metabolites are produced by very low abundant bacterial taxa, which largely have been neglected due to limits of detection. However, the concentration of microbially produced metabolites from these taxa can still reach high levels and have substantial impact on host physiology.

The relationship between genetic liver fat and coronary heart disease is explained by apoB-containing lipoproteins
Highlights • Liver fat-related genetic variants may or may not raise coronary heart disease risk. • Previous studies have shown different results using different genetic variants. • The effect on apoB-containing lipoproteins may explain previous results. • Here, we were able to directly account for the possible effect on plasma apoB. • We found that the effect on coronary heart disease risk is fully explained by apoB.

Prevalence of Subclinical Coronary Artery Atherosclerosis in the General Population
Clinical Perspective What Is New? Using coronary computed tomography angiography, we show that silent coronary atherosclerosis was common (42.1%), significant stenosis (≥50%) was less common (5.2%), and more severe forms were rarely found (1.9%) in a random sample of a middle-aged general population. Disease onset was delayed by 10 years in women. Higher prevalence of coronary atherosclerosis was observed with age and accumulation of risk factors.

Biomarkers of food intake and nutrient status are associated with glucose tolerance status and development of type 2 diabetes in older Swedish women
Background: Diet is frequently associated with both the development and prevention of type 2 diabetes (T2D), but there is a lack of objective tools for assessing the relation between diet and T2D. Biomarkers of dietary intake are unconfounded by recall and reporting bias, and using multiple dietary biomarkers could help strengthen the link between a healthy diet and the prevention of T2D.
The value of apoA-I in predicting heart disease and myocardial infarction
Ischemic heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for approximately 11% of all deaths in 2011. Numerous studies have shown that cardiovascular risk correlates positively and powerfully with total or LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) and correlates inversely with HDL cholesterol (HDL-C).
