Should New York Knicks Give Obi Toppin More Playing Time?
NBA Analysis Network The New York Knicks suffered a terrible loss to the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden. NBA Analysis Network The Chicago Bulls revamped their roster this NBA offseason. They were very aggressive in upgrading the team, as they want to return to the postseason and show Zach LaVine that a contender can be built in Chicago with him as the centerpiece. LaVine could be a free agent in 2022, making this season a very important one for the Bulls. However, Chicago has thrived and sustained its early success so that isn’t much of a concern at this point.

From @royvt: Can Pat Riley take advantage of (the Spurs not listening to any offers from Kawhi Leonard from Western Conference teams)? The NBA draft is hours away and the Miami Heat could jump back into the game. According to Sports Illustrated the Heat are looking into acquiring a first-round pick in tonight’s draft. If you were not able to ask a question this time, send them along for future mailbags via Twitter to @tomdangelo44 and @Anthony_Chiang. You can also e-mail me at tdangelo@pbpost.com. From Carlos, Boca Raton: Any chance the Heat trade Goran Dragic maybe to help get rid of one of their bad contacts? If so could there be a Dragic, Doncic reunion somewhere? Many believed the Raptors should have blown up their roster a year ago but they gambled, handed out several long-term contracts, and brought back most of their players (sound familiar?).
Slovenian national team coach Igor Kokoskov hired by Phoenix Suns
MIAMI — Whenever Heat point guard Goran Dragic faces the Suns, he’s reunited with plenty of familiar faces after spending six seasons with the organization. But his list of connections just got longer after Phoenix hired Igor Kokoskov as its head coach on Wednesday. Kokoskov was the head coach of the Slovenian national team last summer when the small country won the EuroBasket tournament championship behind the play of Dragic.
Heat’s Goran Dragic looks forward to somewhat quiet summer in Slovenia
MIAMI – Goran Dragic knows that day will come. He’ll be relaxing at his in Slovenia this summer, catching up on rest after a whirlwind nine months that saw him win a EuroBasket championship while being named tournament MVP, make his first NBA All-Star team and help lead the Miami Heat to the playoffs, and the calls will come. “As soon as I get back home all my friends are, ‘Let’s play a pickup game,’” Dragic said. “I’m not going to do that, definitely.” Or will he?
2018 NBA playoffs: Heat’s Tyler Johnson struggles through thumb injury
PHILADELPHIA — There is zero chance of Heat guard Tyler Johnson missing tonight’s Game 5 against the 76ers. “He’s ready to go,” coach Erik Spoelstra said at shootaround. “He would probably punch me in the face if I said anything otherwise.” Johnson has been gutting out an injured thumb on his shooting hand since Philadelphia center Joel Embiid knocked him to the floor on a screen in Game 3. He’s been practicing and playing with tape holding it in place, and it’s definitely hampered him.
Sixers take offense to Goran Dragic’s layup in final seconds of Game 2
MIAMI — If losing home-court advantage isn’t enough motivation for the Sixers entering Thursday’s Game 3, it seems like they’ve created some more. With the Heat leading by eight points in the final seconds of their Game 2 win in Philadelphia, point guard Goran Dragic dribbled all the way down the court for an uncontested layup with 1.2 seconds remaining instead of dribbling the clock out.
Heat need to get Goran Dragic going against Sixers’ taller defenders
PHILADELPHIA – Goran Dragic has had his struggles against the 76ers this season and it continued in Game 1 of the playoffs. The Heat’s All-Star point guard is averaging 14.2 points, more than three below his average, on .357 shooting in five games this season against Philadelphia, which has found success by sticking 6-foot-9 Robert Covington on the 6-3 Dragic. As a point guard, Dragic is not used to seeing such length.
Is Goran Dragic worried about his sore knee entering the playoffs?

Miami did not practice Thursday as they watched film instead, but Dragic is expected to be on the court when the team practices Friday before traveling to Philadelphia for the first two games of the series.
Heat feel it’s important to finish season strong and grab sixth spot
NEW YORK – With two games remaining the playoff picture is a bit clearer, at least for the Miami Heat. Win both and the Heat secure the No. 6 seed. Split their final two and they cannot fall lower than No. 7. Lost both and they could wind up No. 8.
Heat say ‘no tanks;’ Dwyane Wade, Goran Dragic, James Johnson all playing tonight vs. Knicks
NEW YORK – So much for the Miami Heat trying to avoid the sixth seed and a possible playoff showdown with Cleveland. Dwyane Wade, Goran Dragic and James Johnson all will return to the Heat (43-36) lineup tonight against the Knicks (27-51) after each took off Wednesday in Atlanta to rest various ailments. Many believe the Heat would be better trying to fall out of the sixth spot and slip to seventh where they would face Boston, which will be be without All-Star Kyrie Irving and Marcus Smart.
Wade said he won’t worry about communicating with LeBron in playoffs
NEW YORK – With a Miami-Cleveland first-round series inching closer, the Heat will lean on Dwyane Wade, right? Just have him download Cleveland’s playbook to give them an edge. They could. … but Wade is not sure it will make a different. “What does it matter?” Wade said following today’s shootaround in preparation for tonight’s game against the Knicks. “The playbook for the Cavaliers is LeBron James, and then everything else. So no one has been able to download him for 15 years.
Heath, not seeding, is most important for Heat entering playoffs
NEW YORK – Good to see the Miami Heat have their priorities in order. The Heat showed they are taking no chances over the final week of the season when they sat Dwyane Wade, Goran Dragic and James Johnson for Wednesday’s semi-meaningless game in Atlanta. While all three are banged up and certainly can used the rest, if this were the postseason, they all would have been on the court. But it isn’t, at least not yet.
Playoff update: With spot secure, we take look at were Heat could land
The Miami Heat can start looking at playoff positioning now knowing no matter what happens, they will have a spot in the postseason. The Heat earned that right after scoring the final 11 points in a 101-98 victory over the lowly Hawks on Tuesday, preventing what would have been a disheartening loss. More satisfying is the Heat return to the playoffs after losing out a season ago on a tiebreaker.
Heat measuring up defensively, joins impressive group in one category
MIAMI – With all the talk about the Heat picking up the pace since the All-Star break, don’t forget about another aspect of Miami’s game, one that surely pleases coach Erik Spoelstra more than anything. The Heat are getting defensive.
Heat dust off Jordan Mickey and he comes through in win over Cavaliers
MIAMI – Jordan Mickey had not played a significant minute in nearly two months when suddenly he found himself on the floor with the first unit during Tuesday’s shootaround. Mickey, the 6-foot-8 forward, was stepping in for Bam Adebayo, the backup center who had started the last eight games in place of Hassan Whiteside. Adebayo rolled his right ankle Sunday in Indiana and joined Whiteside on the sideline, who was about to miss his ninth straight game with a strained left hip flexor.
Heat mailbag: Is it dangerous for teams to jockey to face Boston in first round of playoffs?
If you were not able to ask a question this time, send them along for future mailbags via Twitter to @tomdangelo44 and @Anthony_Chiang. You can also e-mail me at tdangelo@pbpost.com. From @ChrisHypeTrain: Should teams try to position themselves to play a certain team in the playoffs? This comes under the ‘be careful what you wish for’ category. But I am assuming you are referring to the Heat and if they should try to finish seventh and set up a first-round series with the Celtics.
Miami Heat scoring increasing as they pick up the pace
MIAMI – Even Erik Spoelstra, a coach who would much rather win a game in the 90s than the 120s, was impressed with the Heat’s effort this week. In fact, Spoelstra referenced one of the golden eras of offense after his team’s 149-141 double overtime victory over Denver on Monday, a time when the Nuggets routinely would average in the 120-130 per game. “You look at the score and it looks like Miami Heat-Denver Nuggets circa late ’80s,” he said.
With playoffs in sight, Miami Heat facing tough three-game stretch
MIAMI – The Miami Heat are facing their toughest stretch of the final 10 games of the season. Beginning Friday in Oklahoma City, the Heat will take on three straight teams jostling for playoff positioning, two being teams the Heat are chasing in the East. Miami, fresh off a convincing victory over the lowly Knicks on Wednesday, plays the Thunder for the first time this season before traveling to Indiana on Sunday and returning home to face the Cavaliers on Tuesday.
James Johnson turns back the clock (one year) in Heat win
MIAMI – For one of the few times this season we saw James Johnson in a situation that had become routine for him late last season. The game was winding down Monday and Heat coach Erik Spoelstra put the ball in the versatile forward’s hands. Johnson could not convert at the end of the first overtime, running into three Denver Nuggets at the basket. But Johnson did not let that deter him.
Close game steeling Heat for the playoffs
MIAMI – Maybe there is an advantage for the Miami Heat having played in so many close games – such as Monday’s thrilling 149-141 overtime victory over the Nuggets – and maybe those experiences are starting to make a difference.
Heat, Nuggets meet with both teams looking to rise in playoff races
Scouting report: The Nuggets are among seven teams fighting for the final five playoff spots in the West. … Denver is ninth, 1.5 games behind Minnesota. … Gary Harris leads the Nuggets with 17.7 points per game. Nikola Jokic is averaging 17.2 points and 10.5 rebounds. … Denver has the ninth rated offense in the NBA with 109.0 points per 100 possessions. … The Nuggets defense has the ninth-worst rating at 108.6. … The Nuggets have lost 2 of 3, both losses on the road, including at Memphis on Saturday.
Heat’s Goran Dragic: An ‘All-Star’ who’s making ‘All-Star plays’
The Miami Heat have had a few pretty good players in their history. You remember the names – Tim Hardaway, Alonzo Mourning, Shaquille O’Neal, LeBron James, Chris Bosh and one who could not stay away, Dwyane Wade. Goran Dragic never will be at the elite level of those six having taken 10 years to reach his first All-Star game.

Heat taking high road on missed calls that may have cost them two wins
LOS ANGELES – What’s done is done, but the Miami Heat sure have had some bad luck lately when it comes to calls late in close games according to the league’s Last Two Minute Report. And neither coach Erik Spoelstra nor Goran Dragic will blame the referees for Miami’s overtime loss at Sacramento on Wednesday in which two blown calls in the final 10 seconds of regulation went against the Heat.
Multiple missed calls in final seconds may have cost Heat a victory
LOS ANGELES – For the second time in just more than a week, multiple blown calls late in the game may have cost the Heat a win. Miami was on the wrong end of two crucial missed calls late in regulation during Wednesday’s 123-119 overtime loss at Sacramento. The Heat had possession with a one-point lead when Goran Dragic lost control of the ball and Miami was whistled for a 24 second violation with 9.3 seconds to play.
Heat hoping not to relive horror show against fast-paced Lakers
LOS ANGELES – The Miami Heat didn’t know what hit them. Less than 90 seconds into the second quarter a three-point lead was a five-point deficit. And it grew from there. The Los Angeles Lakers were like a runaway freight train, pushing their lead to eight, 12, 14 and settling for an 11-point halftime advantage after posting a 40-point quarter and a stunning 73 at the half. In the end, Miami’s 131-113 loss at home two weeks ago marked the most points the Heat allowed in regulation in 10 years.
