Scattered like runes across cubicles and countertops today will be symbols of our love. Flowers, candy and balloons. We’ll spend $2.5 billion on the stuff. The cooing and cupping of daisies and roses is a flutter for some and a painful reminder to those who once got flowers. Being alone is hard. Feeling judged for it is worse, especially when you’re doing the judging.

Beyond the shopping center, past the discount liquor store, sits a Colonial-style red brick building where an older man is patiently waiting for me. I have not seen him in many years. I’m late. Always late. I reached out. A meeting. Maybe 45 minutes, I said. I hurry through a side door. I’m lost in an unfamiliar floor plan, but I’m found in that familiar church smell. Some blend of floor polish and visitor-center coffee. The wood-paneled room annoys me at first. There is a certain canned phoniness to it.
