‘Ōhi‘a Lehua Forests and ROD — SnoQap
‘Ōhi‘a trees are the bedrock of Hawaiian forests. Not only do they provide watershed protection and are a specific critical habitat for many biota, but they are also a critical food source for endemic birds (Friday and Herbert). ‘Ōhi‘a forests grow on the six largest Hawaiian islands: the Big Island, Maui, Moloka`i, Lana`i, Oahu, and Kaua`i. They are a resilient species, tolerant of various conditions such as frost, volcanic gases, and extreme changes in moisture (Friday and Herbert).
Endangered Plants and Hawaiian Forest Evolution — SnoQap
Although Hawai`i is home to many diverse species of plants, it is also known as the endangered species capital of the world (Rare Plant Program, n.d). “Hawai`i has 272 plants considered endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act [...]” (Hawaiian Plants, 2023). When the islands were first formed, plants were brought over by birds, wind, and ocean currents. Although they originated elsewhere, those plants are considered native since they came to Hawai`i before people arrived.
The Significance of Moss — SnoQap
When it comes to plant species, many vibrant plants catch the eye. Many plants are overlooked but are vital to ecosystems. One such species is moss. The soft, lush growths that carpet forest floors and tree bark are essential for the environment. While easily ignored, mosses provide many benefits to the world around them. Not only are they a source of food and shelter for vertebrates and invertebrates, but they also aid in carbon sequestration and support multiple ecosystem services.
Endometriosis and Barriers in Women’s Healthcare — SnoQap
While healthcare is an ever-progressing field, gender bias and racial discrimination continue to create barriers. These barriers can make it nearly impossible for people to receive the care they need. One such disease that is surrounded by these obstacles is endometriosis. Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 people, and on average, it takes up to 11 years to be diagnosed (DotLab | Bringing You DotEndo for Endometriosis, n.d.-b).
