Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
I was a stringer and assistant for my local paper when I was a senior in high school. My first byline was published on my 18th birthday.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Nope! I would like to though.
How is social media changing news?
It's good and bad. The good part is that we get news almost instantaneously. The bad part is that it's often hard to verify the source.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
One of my favorite fiction podcasts is Welcome to Night Vale, so of course it's Cecil Gershwin Palmer.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
You hold one of the most important responsibilities for society: to gather the facts, especially those not easily known, and report them.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
For story writing - a cell phone, Google Drive and a voice recorder for notes. I also like using Adobe products for audio and video projects.
What's your favorite social network?
I really like Reddit's format.
Why did you become a journalist?
People deserve to know the truth about their community and country. Journalism allows us to tell stories that otherwise wouldn't be heard.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
My high school newspaper sadly died after my freshman year. They didn't allow freshmen on the paper, so I never got the chance.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
What I did in my investigative fellowship during my senior year of college. We looked at negligence and corruption in the railroad industry.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Get as much experience in your desired field/beat as you can! Employers care more about seeing you do journalism than seeing your grades.
What's your favorite drink?
I love tea and coffee. I also love a good Bloody Mary.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I love reading my former publication the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service. They are so underappreciated for the important work they do.
