By Grace Renderman, Associate Editor North American intermodal volume continues to lag in 2023, and it isn’t likely to rebound anytime soon. In the year’s first quarter, total volume fell 8.6% compared to the level in the same quarter in 2022, according to Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) data. The number of domestic and international containers sank 5.8% and 8.8%, respectively, while trailer volume logged the biggest loss at 28.8%.

APTA: Workforce shortage prompts service cuts

By Grace Renderman, Associate Editor The ongoing workforce shortage in the North American transit industry is both widespread and severe, according to a study released in October by the American Public Transportation Association. Ninety-six percent of U.S. transit agencies surveyed reported a worker shortage. And 84% of those agencies say the shortfall is affecting their ability to provide adequate service, leading to reduced operations on some routes and suspended service on others.

What was your first job as a journalist?

I was a stringer and assistant for my local paper when I was a senior in high school. My first byline was published on my 18th birthday.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Nope! I would like to though.

How is social media changing news?

It's good and bad. The good part is that we get news almost instantaneously. The bad part is that it's often hard to verify the source.
