The former wife of Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex A. Heuermann will not be present when he is sentenced to life in prison Wednesday, her attorney announced. Asa Ellerup has declined to attend the hearing to not distract from the impact the crimes have had on Heuermann’s eight admitted victims and their families, attorney Robert Macedonio said in a statement to Newsday.

Matthew Smith to plead guilty in drunken-driving crash that killed Nassau Police Officer Patricia Espinosa, sources say

The alleged drunken driver who fatally struck Nassau Police Officer Patricia Espinosa as she drove to work, killing the mother of a toddler, is expected to plead guilty in connection with the case at his next court appearance Thursday, sources told Newsday. Matthew Smith, 20, of Hauppauge, who has been indicted on 19 charges, including aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated vehicular assault, previously pleaded not guilty. Details of the plea agreement have not yet been disclosed.

Jose Saez Jr., ex-Brentwood pastor, sentenced to more than 17 years in prison for sexually exploiting a child

A former Brentwood pastor was sentenced to 17½ years in federal prison Tuesday for enticing minors to perform sexually explicit acts and sending videos of the encounters to other men. Jose Saez Jr., 31, who has been a pastor at Iglesia Cristiana Alumbrando El Camino church on Second Avenue in Brentwood, had pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation of a child in March 2025.
