Phosphorus drawdown management reduced soil phosphorus and edge-of-field phosphorus concentrations

Abstract Phosphorus (P) from historic P applications stored in agricultural soils can be drawn down by harvesting crops without fully replacing harvested P with P fertilizer, thereby potentially reducing a source of P loss to surface waterways that impairs water quality. Soil P drawdown research has typically consisted of small plot studies, and the applicability of these findings to the field scale remains uncertain.

By Greg LaBarge, Ohio State Extension Managing nitrogen (N) efficiently in corn with high N fertilizer prices compared to corn grain prices. In several common production scenarios, soil-supplied nitrogen can replace a significant portion—or in some cases all—of the fertilizer N typically applied. Two situations where this occurs most often are following fall-applied manure and planting corn after nitrogen-rich cropping systems such as alfalfa or long-term cover crops.

By Greg LaBarge, Ohio State University Extension An analysis of potassium fertilizer response research is giving Ohio farmers clearer guidance on when potassium (K) fertilizer boosts crop yields—and when it does not. The study, conducted by Ohio State University researchers and summarized in a recently released Extension factsheet, draws on 458 field trials across 40 counties to pinpoint crop responses at varying soil potassium levels.
