Making the most of opportunities as the 118th Congress closes
It can be uncharacteristically quiet in the nation’s capital during the post-election “lame duck” session before the end of the year. Even more so after a presidential election, when most eyes are on next year, the next Congress, the next assignment in the next administration. Both chambers of Congress and their committees will look different next year. Retirements, administration appointments, and filling those vacancies mean new leaders and new staff.
WOCCU’s focus on underserved populations is providing a hand up to refugees, migrants, women and youth
World Council of Credit Unions Whether it is refugee and migrant young adults in Peru and Ecuador, or women small-and-medium-enterprise (SME) owners in Kenya and Ukraine, World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) is improving the lives of underserved populations across the globe through its technical assistance projects funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Ukrainian credit unions and their members continue to show resilience during year 3 of Russia’s war

Refining the consumer loan experience
Last month, we talked about gathering consumer insights to better understand your customers’ needs and preferences, with the goal of improving their user experience. In the same spirit, we did a little research of our own… We surveyed 2,000 consumers about their current and desired loan experiences. The findings provide an interesting challenge for those offering consumer loans.
What I won’t tell you after I crashed the GAC
Dear supervisor, you encouraged me to sign up to crash the Governmental Affairs Conference. I was so excited that you thought of me. I was so proud to represent our state and credit union as I collaborated with other crashers from all over. We networked. We heard from credit union partners. We dove into the history of the credit union why. We listened to speakers ranging from platforms that help our members financially succeed, to how someone found the road to success within the CU movement.
Here's what makes On The Mark Strategies' consumer experience training different
There are plenty of community bank and credit union consumer experience training options out there nowadays. But not all of them provide the same value. Many are off-the-shelf, cookie cutter options that don’t cater to your institution’s unique brand fingerprint. Others offer a bit more customization, but they don’t stick around for the long haul. On The Mark Strategies’ consumer experience training is different than both these camps.
Janet Yellen warns inflation decline might not be 'smooth'
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Wednesday that inflation could face a bumpy return to normal after back-to-back reports showed that price pressures within the U.S. economy rebounded at the start of the year. In a sit-down interview with FOX Business’ Edward Lawrence, Yellen pushed back against stagflation concerns and maintained that progress on inflation has not stalled. “I wouldn’t expect this to be a smooth path month to month, but the trend is clearly favorable,” she said.
Winning the war for deposits: Strategies to drive real growth
As banks and credit unions grapple with intense competition for deposits in a rising rate environment, many are finding that chasing high-cost CDs leads to unsustainable “phantom growth.” Institutions need a fresh approach to build low-cost, loyal core deposits.

By reimagining marketing’s place and purpose, credit unions can attract new members and reshape perceptions among their executives. First, let’s identify what marketing can and cannot control.

Hey job seekers—STOP DOING THIS! - CUInsight
I will start this article the same way I will end it: I LOVE BEING A RECRUITER! I mean that. I love helping job seekers find their next role. Occasionally, I am even a part of someone finding their dream job! It’s a fulfilling role and I don’t take it lightly. While I may be just one cog in the wheel, it is so rewarding to play even a tiny role in helping someone grow their career. But—if I can be honest for a moment—as a recruiter, I have seen some things.

Enforcing a standard of ethics in the credit union industry
I am very proud of the credit union industry. In many ways, it reminds me of my military service. True credit union professionals, just like military professionals, adhere to a set of principles that differentiate our industry from “other financial institutions.” Additionally, as financial cooperatives, our industry also champions the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility, and caring for others.

Never underestimate your impact on others
One week of my work year is a rush like none other, when I join thousands of fellow industry professionals from across the globe at the World Credit Union Conference (WCUC). And WCUC 2023 in Vancouver, British Columbia provided an even bigger jolt of adrenaline than any previous version—setting records with more than 3,000 attendees, nearly 100 speakers and over 40 educational sessions. But beyond the numbers was an energy and enthusiasm that was fresh and palpable.

While membership in the world’s 87,914 credit unions grew by 5% to surpass 393 million in 2021, that increase was hardly equal across all 118 countries surveyed for World Council’s 2021 Statistical Report. Jumping into the deep end: The first all-virtual World Credit Union Conference
It is very normal for the World Council of Credit Unions’ Education and Networking team to feel a sense of accomplishment and relief in late July. After all, the annual World Credit Union Conference (WCUC) they work all year to stage has just ended and they have some time to reflect on a job well done. But if you listen closely, you can hear a much deeper, more prolonged exhale coming from them this July. Why? They just pulled off an unprecedented feat: a fully virtual World Credit Union Conference.
Most of the global credit union system still sees no light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel
In America, the future is getting a little brighter each day where the COVID-19 pandemic is concerned. More than one-third of adults have received at least one dose of a vaccine, with one in five Americans now fully vaccinated. While new COVID-19 case numbers have started to increase slightly in recent weeks, the United States is still far below the record high numbers we saw in late 2020.
