Everything I needed to know, I learned at Gene's Tasty Burger | Opinion
Greg Pogue Guest columnist Editor's note: Native Wichitan Greg Pogue is writing occasional guest columns for the Times Record News. This one seems especially appropriate as Father's Day approaches on June 15. Being Gene and Jean Pogue's son came with perks. As pillars of the Wichita Falls community, trust extended through them to my sister Stephanie and me.
Longtime outdoors writer Lorance was a true treasure
Murfreesboro native and resident Mike Lorance, age 89, passed away Thursday, July 8, at Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital. Lorance was a heralded newspaper and television outdoors reporter, columnist and personality, including 35 years as outdoors columnist for The Daily News Journal in Murfreesboro, retiring from that position in 2015.
Pogue: Lawsuit puts Butch Jones on defense
Former Tennessee football player Drae Bowles had claimed in a wide-ranging civil lawsuit filed against the University of Tennessee that Volunteers football coach Butch Jones told him he had “betrayed the team” in helping a woman who said she had been recently raped. Consequently, football players A.J. Johnson and Michael Williams were charged with aggravated rape in that case. They have separate trials scheduled for later this year.
With football over, focus turns to March Madness
MURFREESBORO — Putting another football season to bed after the Super Bowl with some February hoops thoughts ahead of looming March Madness … MTSU’s men — 17-6 overall and 9-2 in league play — are just one game off the pace of league-leading UAB (20-4, 10-1), which comes to Murphy Center on Feb. 21. The Blue Raiders have won nine of 10 games heading into games Thursday at Louisiana Tech and Saturday at Southern Miss.
Pogue: Midterm signees benefit Raiders
MURFREESBORO — By the time MTSU football arrived in Nassau for the Bahamas Bowl played on Christmas Eve, 20 Blue Raiders had already received their diploma as midterm graduates. That number ranks fifth nationally for midterm graduates among the 128 teams playing at the FBS level and is certainly a feather in the cap for Blue Raiders football.
Pogue: Mirror scheduling hurts MTSU-WKU rivalry
MURFREESBORO — It was quite the night for MTSU basketball while facing Western Kentucky on Saturday. On the home front at Murphy Center, the Lady Raiders were ending WKU’s 14-game winning streak with a rousing 83-75 victory. A raucous crowd of 5,125 that included mostly MTSU fans raised the roof in a game nationally televised by Fox Sports.
Pogue: Insell takes advantage of NBA rule
MURFREESBORO — Rick Insell has been an unabashed fan of the NBA for a long time. The favorite teams currently of the MTSU women’s basketball coach are San Antonio and Golden State because of how they play team basketball. Not only does Insell watch NBA games, but he takes notes throughout for use coaching his own team.
Titans get back to roots in winning back fans
MURFEESBORO — If the Titans were graded on a week-to-week basis, the new leadership regime enters this week at 1-0. Then again, the only weeks that ultimately count are those with the 16 regular-season games each season. In that regard, the Titans have received a passing grade only five times in their past 32 tries, after going 2-14 in 2014 and 3-13 last season. All that led to Mike Mularkey taking off the interim tag as head coach in replacing Ken Whisenhunt who was fired midseason.
Pogue: Davis comes a long way since $69 suit
MURFREESBORO – MTSU men’s basketball coach Kermit Davis hit a milestone with career win No. 400 last Saturday when the Blue Raiders won at Old Dominion. Of that total, a school-record 263 of them and counting have come in the 13-plus seasons since taking over the MTSU reins in 2002. That’s what stood out the most for Davis, who also has head coaching stints in chronological order at Southwest Mississippi Community College, Idaho, Texas A&M, Idaho (again), Chipola Junior College and MTSU.
Pogue: Titans must regain fans' trust
NASHVILLE — It was at the end of nearly an hour news conference Monday announcing the hiring of new general manager Jon Robinson and head coach Mike Mularkey before Titans fans heard what they really needed to hear. Preceding that was a variety of comments from Titans president Steve Underwood, Mularkey and Robinson that ranged from mostly the predictable to sadly the absurd.
MTSU president played role in creation of Bahamas Bowl
A native of the Bahamas, MTSU President Dr. Sidney McPhee played an instrumental role in the Bahamas landing the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl game that is now owned by ESPN. At 11 a.m. on Thursday, MTSU plays Western Michigan in the second annual Popeyes Bahamas Bowl at Robinson National Stadium in Nassau.
Rare MTSU hoops, hockey doubleheader set for Saturday
MURFREESBORO — Bridgestone Arena has been open since 1996 and home to the NHL’s Nashville Predators since their 1998-99 inaugural season. Over the years, the building has also played host to a variety of events ranging from the SEC and NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, including the Women’s Final Four, Arena League Football, monster truck and motocross events, the Country Music Association Awards nationally televised show, the circus and countless concerts.
Mariota, Titans say aloha to home drought
Depending on how the Hawaiian word is used, it can either mean greetings or farewell. Led by their own native of the 50th state, rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota, the Titans expressed both Sunday in their wild 42-39 win over the visiting Jaguars. As in a thankful goodbye, the Titans bid adieu to the third-longest home losing streak in NFL history. They had lost 11 in a row since last winning at Nissan Stadium way back on Oct.
While you were sleeping, Raiders were winning
MURFREESBORO – Winning the Great Alaska Shootout over Thanksgiving weekend was quite the accomplishment for MTSU men’s basketball and coach Kermit Davis. The nation’s oldest holiday college basketball tournament, former Shootout champions read like a who’s who of college hoops, including former NCAA national champions Kentucky, North Carolina, Louisville, UCLA, Michigan State, Syracuse, Marquette, Arizona and North Carolina State.
Pogue: Price’s payday well deserved
MURFREESBORO — Vanderbilt baseball coach Tim Corbin has told the story many times about how he talked David Price into staying in school after his freshman year. Price had earlier departed Blackman High School as one of the top pitching prospects in the country and had signed to play for Corbin, who with Price and many other future stars would gradually grow the Commodores into the best college baseball program in the country.
Pogue: Titans’ losing streak lulls fans to sleep
NASHVILLE – The Titans playing at home have become to their fans what tryptophan is to turkey. Some claim tryptophan — an amino acid found in many foods other than just the Thanksgiving bird — causes those post-holiday meal crashes. It is probably more of what else you heap on the plate alongside the turkey that delivers the ensuing slumber, but the snooze comes nonetheless.
Darius Thompson making immediate impact for Cavaliers
MURFREESBORO — Former Blackman High basketball standout Darius Thompson has had a nice start to his career at Virginia, which is off to a 5-1 start and is ranked No. 12 in the country. Thompson played at Tennessee two seasons ago as a freshman and sat out last season after transferring to Virginia. Before that at Blackman under coach Barry Wortman, he was an All-State, All-Region and All-District performer each of his last two seasons, guiding the Blaze to a 56-5 record during that span.
Pogue: Many reasons to be thankful today
MURFREESBORO – Some reasons to be thankful on this Thanksgiving … • That the best high school football is still played in Rutherford County. Sure, Blount County just south of Knoxville has perennial prep powers Maryville and Alcoa, but it can’t boast the overall quality of depth of what we have right here. Here’s pulling for Oakland Friday night in the Class 6A semifinal match at Maryville.
Next year big for Rutherford County football recruits
MURFREESBORO — When it comes to rankings in high school football recruiting, the best place to turn is 247Sports.com. The experts there don’t provide their own rankings, but offer composite rankings culled from the top recruiting services. In as much, Rutherford County continues its run of producing top-notch high school football prospects. That includes five of the Top 75 senior prospects for the class of 2016 in Tennessee hailing from local high schools.
Pogue: Mularkey, win breathes life in Titans
MURFREESBORO – Interim Titans coach Mike Mularkey had a simple message to the team before Sunday’s overtime win at New Orleans. Win the game and take Monday off was what he told a team in desperate need of something good. A few days earlier, second-year coach Ken Whisenhunt had been fired after losing a sixth straight game, which was the team’s 16th loss in 17 games during a miserable 3-20 tenure.
Pogue: Classic could be special event
Collegiate Football on the Field MURFREESBORO – Sitting here enjoying the chamber of commerce-like weather, thought I’d write a chamber of commerce-like column. Be it far from my style to jump on board the promotional bandwagon, much less go first person with any of my opinion pieces. Nor will I tell anybody how to spend their money and time, especially when it comes to sporting events, for which I hardly ever pay admission, get free parking and usually am fed quite well to boot.
Jones key in pulling off inaugural football classic
Greg Pogue MURFREESBORO – By trade, John Jones runs his own successful real estate firm. With family, it’s the proud father of four, including Tennessee freshman offensive lineman Jack Jones. But unwittingly, Jones has taken on a new role, and that is one by proxy of being the director of the inaugural Middle Tennessee Football Classic on Saturday at Floyd Stadium that pits two Rutherford County high school football powers against two of the top programs in Alabama.
Wiel sidelined with broken hand
MURFREESBORO – Zander Wiel finally got a taste of professional baseball last Sunday when he debuted with the Elizabethton Twins, the rookie league affiliate of the Minnesota Twins in the Appalachian League. But for the time being, a small taste is all it’s going to be for the former Blackman High and Vanderbilt standout, who was selected last month in the 12th round of the draft by the Minnesota Twins.
Zander Wiel ready to start pro career
MURFREESBORO – Zander Wiel knows basically where Elizabethton is located. Next week, he’ll find out firsthand when he arrives at the county seat of Carter County and its 14,000 or so residents. Technically located in the geographic region known as the “Tri-Cities” — Johnson City, Bristol and Newport — it’s in the far northeastern tip of the state and just a good relay throw away from Virginia.
MTSU's Given to be enshrined in TWSA Hall of Fame
Ed Given had a simple philosophy when it came to a hall-of-fame career as sports information director at MTSU and WKU. Having grown up playing basketball and baseball in Ripley and then collegiately at Tennessee before transferring to be near his ailing mother and doing the same at Union University, Given knew sports writing was the route to take professionally.
Middleton named to SEC All-Academic Honor Roll
Tennessee freshman Alexa Middleton, left, was named to the SEC All-Academic Honor Roll. Middleton was a four-year starter at Riverdale and Miss Basketball recipient. MURFREESBORO – Not only did Alexa Middleton fit in nicely on the court in her first season with Tennessee women’s basketball, she also excelled in the classroom as well. The former Riverdale standout has been named to the Southeastern Conference’s First-Year Academic Honor Roll.
MTSU’s Jim Simpson bridges gap between past and present
Not surprisingly, the office of Jim Simpson in MTSU’s Rose and Emmett Kennon Sports Hall of Fame is filled with relics from decades of Blue Raiders athletics. A baseball uniform dating back nearly a century is displayed through his office window at the museum’s entrance. He has one of two basketballs used in the NCAA tournament game at Murphy Center in 1979 that featured eventual national champion Michigan State and star player Magic Johnson.
Commentary: C-USA whiffed on scheduling with MTSU, WKU
When Conference USA released this season’s basketball schedules for league members, one of the first places MTSU and Western Kentucky fans checked was to see when their rivalry would be renewed on the hardwood. That goes for men’s and women’s basketball, easily the best, longest and most-storied rivalries in the league in both.
Pogue: TSSAA finally says goodbye to Week 0
Not that it was the bane of my existence, but the designation of Week 0 as the first week of high school football had become an irritant. Remember when mom told you not to scratch that scab or it would only make it worse. Out of mind until heard, the TSSAA’s official name of Week 0 for the first week of the high school football season had long become more than just making no sense whatsoever, but graduating to one of a constant bother.
