Gary Tyler, 67, is a fiber artist living and working in Los Angeles. His memoir, Stitching Freedom, was published in 2025. Quilting is how I tell stories, many of which are drawn from my time on death row. Convict Poker depicts a popular event at the Angola Prison Rodeo in Louisiana — a group of inmates play poker at a red plastic table while being charged by an angry 3,000-pound bull. The last man at the table when the bull crashes into it wins $500.

Everyone thought I was crazy. In 2010, I made the miniature humanoid robot DARwIn-OP, and then I made its programming code, blueprints and other information freely available for anyone to read, copy or adapt. My goal was never to patent and sell this robot. It was to expand knowledge. Today, thousands of DARwIns help teach robotic locomotion and autonomous action in labs around the world. Someone even put instructions online for 3-D printing your own robot.

When the mortgage business melted down in 2008, it knocked a big hole in our retirement. I’d spent 15 years working as a mortgage officer, and there I was at 50, sitting at my desk with nothing to do, my eyelids twitching from the stress. I came across an article online about ranchers getting paid to graze goats as a way to mitigate fire risk, and I thought, I could do that. I’d grown up on a ranch here in Red Bluff, [California], and we raised cattle and hogs, so I was returning to my roots.
