Introduction In 2009, the World Health Organization declared the first pandemic influenza outbreak in 41 years.1 In April 2009, shortly after this declaration, 46% of Americans were concerned that they or someone in their immediate family might get sick from H1N1 (subtype hemagglutinin 1 neuraminidase 1) influenza A during the next 12 months.2 It was initially unclear what the public health impact of this pandemic would be and how medical practices should respond.
